Facile fabrication of porous hollow CeO2 microspheres using polystyrene spheres as templates

Abstract: Porous hollow CeO 2 microspheres were fabricated using negative-charged PS microspheres as templates by a facile method. The hollow CeO 2 microspheres were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and N 2 adsorption-desorption. The results showed that the as-synthesized hollow CeO 2 microspheres are well monodisperse and uniform in size. The porous shells of hollow micro… Show more

“…For the traditional template methods, generally a coating is formed on the surface of the template such as polystyrene, silica or carbon spheres through hydrolysis and precipitation of inorganic precursors, and this process needs to be controlled precisely to avoid agglomeration. In the present case, metal ions are easily adsorbed onto the surface layer of PDA spheres by chelation.…”

“…A variety of strategies have been adopted to prepare hollow nanospheres, such as via redox reaction-based self-templating [4], electrochemical synthesis [5] and template-assisted approach [6][7][8]. Compared with other methods, template-assisted approach is mature and efficient.…”

“…Previously, fabrication of CeO 2 , ZrO 2 , and CeO 2 -ZrO 2 composites has been accomplished through several techniques, for example by using sacrificial templates such as polymers [29], colloidal carbon [30], and silica [31] and by calcination of metal-organicframeworks (MOFs) [32,33], to yield higher-order spherical, core-shell, tube, and cubic structures. Recently, we developed an ultimately simple, rapid, and template-free fabrication strategy for CeO 2 and ZrO 2 MARIMO NPs, in which a precursor solution of Ce(NO 3 ) 3 or ZrO(NO 3 ) 2 and formic acid in methanol was rapidly heated (at a rate of 500 °C/min) to 300 °C in a sealed SUS-316 tubular reactor and maintained at the temperature for only 10 min [25].…”
