Facile Design and Fabrication of Superwetting Surfaces with Excellent Wear-Resistance

Abstract: Preparation of mechanically durable superwetting surfaces is imperative, yet challenging for the wide range of real applications where high durability is required. Mechanical wear on superwetting surfaces usually degrades weak roughness, leading to loss of functions. In this study, wear-resistant superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic and superhydrophobic surfaces are prepared by anchoring reinforced coatings via adhesive-swelling and adhesive-bonding processes, respectively. The results of the sandpaper … Show more

“…After a period of time, an organic layer is formed on the particle surface of FD Figure 3c. The organic layer is non-polar and possesses low surface free energy, which is responsible for the surface hydrophobicity of the mFD powders, as shown in Figure 3a [21,22,23,24]. The surface bonded organic layer could be further verified by FT-IR measurement.…”

“…Generally speaking, most of the oxides are intrinsically hydrophilic because of the surface polar groups of hydroxy, while NR is a non-polar polymer [19,20,21]. As a result, the polar powders of inorganic oxides cannot be well dispersed in the NR matrix.…”

“…[ 10 ] For example, multicomponent coatings comprising organic‐inorganic, [ 17,18 ] all‐organic [ 10,19 ] or all‐inorganic [ 20,21 ] medium have a good adhesion or covalent bonding with the substrate via intricate chemical reactions, and they can withstand harsh conditions under external environment. As the fourth strategy, an intrinsically abrasion resistant material or stable medium, such as fabric, [ 22,23 ] adhesive, [ 24,25 ] porous material, [ 26,27 ] bulk material, [ 28,29 ] and microscale polymer or metal [ 30,31 ] was used as a template to reduce the damage to the surface roughness features.…”

“…These materials have micro/nanotextured structures abound in the entire system. 38−41 Therefore, even if the upper portion of the material is worn away, the exposed portion at the bottom still has a similar structure. In addition, wear-resistant elastomer materials (such as silicone composite 42,43 and EVA 44 ) can be introduced during the preparation of the superhydrophobic surface to enhance its durable properties.…”
