The present study deals with depositional environment and microfacies analysis of the Asmari Formation in the Nasr-Abad section of Zagros basin in SW of Iran. The thickness of 240 m with Nasr-Abad stratigraphic section to define microfauna is taken from Asmari Formation. Asmari Formation is located in SE of Shiraz. According to the identified index microfossils, following three Oligocene assemblages are determined: 1: Nummulites fichteli-Nummulites vascus, 2: Archaias asmaricuas-Archiaias hensoni, and 3: Peneroplis evolutus-Austroterillina howchini. According to the field observation, thin section studies and the results of petrographic analyses, four microfacies contain open marine (MF1-3), shoal (MF-4), lagoon (MF5-7) and tidal flat (MF8-9) depositional environments are identified. Based on the paleoenvironmental interpretations, the lack of barrier reefs as well as of gradual facies change, a homoclinal ramp mainly represented by its inner and middle sectors is proposed and reconstructed for depositional environment of the Asmari Formation in the studied section.

Microfacies analysis and depositional environment of the Pila Spi Formation (Middle-Late Eocene) were studied in the Nerwa outcrop, Berat anticline, High Folded Zone in Iraqi Kurdistan Region. The total thickness of the formation is 13.5 m composed of medium to thick bedded yellow to white limestone and thick bedded grey to white dolomitic limestone. It is interbedded with thin beds of yellow marl in the lower part and have chert nodules in the upper part. The petrographic study of 17 thin sections of the Pila Spi carbonate showed that the majority of the carbonates are micritic mixed with some microspar. The skeletal grains involve benthonic foraminifera, ostracods, mollusca, dasycladacean green algae, pelecypods, gastropods, rare planktonic foraminifera and bioclasts. Non skeletal grain included peloids, intraclasts and extraclasts which is mainly monocrystalline quartz grain. Based on field observations and petrographic analysis, three different lithological units were distinguished in the Pila Spi Formation in the studied section. They are in ascending order: medium to thick bedded limestone interbedded with marl unit, thick bedded dolomitic limestone unit and, cherty limestone unit. Depending on detailed microfacies analysis of carbonate rocks, three main microfacies and twelve submicrofacies were recognized in the studied section of the Pila Spi Formation. From the sum of all petrographic, facies and textural analyses, it is here concluded that Pila Spi Formation in the Nerwa section was deposited at subtidal semi-restricted lagoon, in lower part gradually changed to open lagoon environment toward the upper part.

Detailed studies of sedimentology and petrology of oil ﬁelds, especially oil ﬁelds located in the seas, play a very important role in reducing the risk of danger, increasing harvest, and reducing the amount of environmental pollution. The South Pars gas ﬁeld in the waters of the Persian Gulf on the joint border line of Iran and Qatar and on the south coast of Iran has been used as a comprehensive model for this type of study. In these studies, the sedimentary environment and sequential stratigraphy of the Scorpion and Sarvak Formations in the South Pars gas ﬁeld in wells 1 and 3 have been investigated. Microscopic studies and analysis of gamma-ray and acoustic diagrams of these formations have led to the identiﬁcation of 9 facies in three facies belts related to wetland, dam, and open sea. Dam facies have been identiﬁed only in Sarvak formation. This study shows that the facies belts of the abovementioned formations in a ramp platform are also sloping. Sequence stratigraphy of Kazhdomi and Sarvak Formations in the study wells shows that Kazhdomi Formation has one sedimentary sequence (third category cycle) and Sarvak Formation has two sedimentary sequences. The lower boundaries of sequences 1 and 2 and the upper boundary of sequence 3 have type 1 (SB1) discontinuities, and the boundary between sequences 2 and 3 has type 2 (SB2) discontinuities.
