Facial skin metastasis due to small-cell lung cancer: a case report

Abstract: IntroductionCutaneous metastases in the facial region occur in less than 0.5% of patients with metastatic cancer. They are an important finding and are not often the first sign leading to diagnosis.Case presentationWe describe the case of a 64-year-old male patient who presented with dyspnea, pleuritic pain, loss of weight and a nodule on his left cheek. A chest X-ray revealed a left upper lobe mass with mediastinal lymphadenopathy. Excision biopsy of the facial nodule revealed small-cell lung carcinoma. Palli… Show more

“…Size of skin metastasis was 5-50 mm in diameter (1)(2)(3)(4)(5). Most of them were less than 20 mm in diameter (2,3,5,6,(9)(10)(11). Various shapes were found in skin metastasis such as nodular, inflammatory, and the most lesions were firm, raised, and hemispherical, covered by an intact epidermis, while some patients had ulcerated lesions (2,3,6,8,9).…”

“…SCLC is fatal and most patients die within one year of presentation, with median survival for extensive stage disease being 6-8 months. 18 SCLC has a tendency to progress rapidly and to metastasize early and extensively. Common metastatic sites include lung, liver, bone, adrenal gland and central nervous system.…”

“…A cutaneous metastatic tumor is relatively rare: the incidence of cutaneous metastasis has been reported to be only 0.7-9% in patients with cancer. [1][2][3][4] Generally, the prognosis for these patients is poor. [5][6][7] Resection of the cutaneous metastasis is therefore not a radical therapy.…”
