The practical implementation of aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (AZIBs) has encountered obstacles stemming from the limited reversibility of the zinc anode, primarily due to dendrite proliferation and water‐induced reactions occurring. In this investigation, a novel bifunctional interphase is proposed by integrating nitrogen and oxygen group graphene quantum dot (N‐O‐GQD) additives into the electrolyte. Experimental results and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the amphipathic N‐O‐GQD additive enhances the stability of the electrode by forming a protection layer on Zn surface. The zincophilic and hydrophobic nitrogen function groups stick to the surface of Zn electrodes to form a hydrophobic layer that shields water molecules from the electrode and promotes the uniform deposition of Zn. The hydrophilic hydroxyl function groups are exposed to the electrolyte to improve the compatibility at the electrode/electrolyte interface. As a result, the amphipathic N‐O‐GQD additive enables a robust cycling performance at high depth of discharge (DOD). Significantly, cells incorporating N‐O‐GQDs demonstrate a remarkable Coulombic efficiency of 99.7% over 900 cycles and sustain dendrite‐free cycling for 564 h (DOD = 51%). Particularly noteworthy is the performance of the modified Zn||ZnVO full cell with robust cycling behavior, enduring 4 000 cycles at 10 A g−1.

Rechargeable batteries have been regarded as a truly transformative technology, providing energy storage for portable electronics, power tools, and even electric vehicles. Unfortunately, the practical applications of new battery systems are postponed by some inevitable technical bottlenecks. Sometimes the technical know‐how gained from the current state‐of‐the‐art lithium‐based batteries is untransferable. Therefore, with the continuous development of chemistry, materials and physics, computational materials science has gradually become crucial in supporting the field of rechargeable batteries technically. In this review, brief overviews of computational methods are first presented for the research of battery materials. The study then summarizes the recent advances of computational techniques in assisting experimental analyses, elucidating reaction mechanisms, and exploring new materials. Finally, the challenges and perspectives for future computational research are prospected. This review is anticipated to stimulate design inspiration of novel materials and structures with the assistance of theoretical simulations toward advanced energy storage systems.

Mitigating Zn Dendrite Growth and Enhancing the Utilization of Zn Electrode in Aqueous Zn‐Ion Batteries

In spite of extensive research and appreciable progress, in aqueous zinc‐ion batteries, Zn metal anode is struggling with low Zn utility and poor cycling stability. In this study, a 3D “electrochemical welding” composite electrode is designed by introduction of ZnO/C nanofibers film to copper foils as an anode according to pre‐electrodeposition active Zn (Zn@ZnO/C‐Cu). The flow of Zn2+ through carbon fiber layer is regulated by zincophilic ZnO, promoting homogeneous diffusion of Zn2+ to Cu foil. In subsequent Zn deposition/stripping processes, the hydrophobicity of ZnO/C fiber layer reduces water at the interface of Zn@ZnO/C‐Cu and results in uniform electric field significant suppressing growth of Zn dendritic and side reactions. Thus, pre‐electrodeposition active Zn electrochemical welds ZnO/C nanofibers and Cu foil collectively provide stable charge/electron transfer and stripping/plating of Zn with low polarization and excellent cycling performance. The assembled symmetrical batteries exhibit stable cycling performance for over 470 h under 20% utilization of Zn at 5 mA cm−2, and an average coulombic efficiency of 99.9% at low negative/positive capacity ratio (N/P = 1) after 1000 cycles in the Zn@ZnO/C‐Cu||Na2V6O16·1.5H2O full cell.
