Facet‐Dependent On‐Surface Reactions in the Growth of CdSe Nanoplatelets

Abstract: Facet‐dependent on‐surface reactions are systematically studied on zinc‐blende CdSe nanoplatelets with atomically‐flat {001} basal facets and small yet non‐polar side facets. The on‐surface half‐reactions between the surface Se sites and Cd carboxylates in the solution are qualitatively equivalent to those on the spheroidal counterparts. Conversely, the on‐surface half‐reactions between the surface Cd sites and the activated Se precursors in solution show a strong facet‐dependence, which includes three disting… Show more

“…The latter is conrmed by the signicantly lower PLQY of quasi-quadratic core only NPLs aer purication (0.7% vs. 8.0% for quasirectangular NPLs). 33,57 In this regard, also the differences in the formation process of NPLs with different aspect ratios need to be taken into account. While the thickness of CdSe NPLs is kinetically controlled, 58,59 their shape (in case of 4 ML NPLs) is determined by the amount of water (more precisely the amount of OH À ions) in the reaction mixture.…”

“…The exposed Cd‐terminated basal facets of colloidal zinc blende CdSe NPLs are composed of structurally identical polar [ 28 ] planes and thus are stabilized by various types of ligands [ 75 ] to assure charge neutrality. Although there are several competing formation mechanisms of CdSe NPLs, including oriented attachment with specific precursors, [ 76,77 ] anisotropic Ostwald ripening of small NPLs, [ 78 ] and kinetic instability caused by insoluble precursors, [ 79 ] the driving force of anisotropic growth for CdSe NPLs with isotropic zinc blende lattice structure is still under debate. However, ligands are believed to play an important role during the anisotropic growth of CdSe NPLs.…”

“…2(a) and 2(b)). For the Se-ZnSe QDs, their surface ligands are either fatty amines (R'NH2) bonded on the remaining Zn sites or (Se)-H-NH2R' on the Se sites [40,43]. For such ligand configurations, they would not appear significantly larger than the corresponding Zn-ZnSe QDs coated with Zn-(OOCR)2 ligands under TEM.…”
