SummarySocial support is important to optimize bariatric surgery outcomes, but limited tools exist for brief and effective assessment preoperatively. The aims of the study were to determine the extent to which two ratings of social support can predict bariatric surgery outcomes, and to examine any associations between these two methods.In this retrospective study, patients were included for whom the Cleveland clinic behavioral rating system (CCBRS) and Flanagan quality of life scale (FQoLS) scores were obtained as part of their preoperative psychosocial evaluation. They were followed up for 6 to 24 months after bariatric surgery. Linear and logistic regressions were performed with patients' CCBRS and FQoLS scores as independent variables, and percent excess weight loss (%EWL), length of stay (LOS), complications, readmissions and loss to follow‐up as dependent variables. The prediction of CCBRS ratings from FQoLS social support items was also evaluated. A total of 415 patients were included in the analysis. There were significant associations between the CCBRS and three of the four relevant FQoLS self‐ratings. As CCBRS and FQoLS scores increased, complications decreased significantly. The CCBRS alone additionally predicted decreased length of hospital stay and approached significance for predicting decreased readmission rates. There were no associations between %EWL and behavior ratings. The degree of patients' social support is associated with important bariatric surgery outcomes. It is possible to obtain this valuable information via the administration of brief assessments prior to bariatric surgery.

BackgroundObesity is a worldwide problem with different treatment options. Bariatric surgery is an effective treatment for severe obesity; however, it leads to drastic changes (e.g., changes in everyday life and eating behavior) for patients, which may lead to information needs. Our aim was to identify the information needs of patients undergoing bariatric surgery and to explore the information provision within the healthcare process of bariatric surgery in Germany.MethodsWe conducted n=14 semi-structured telephone interviews between April 2018 and April 2019. The interview guide was designed prior to the interviews and consisted of 4 main sections (demographic information, pre- and postoperative healthcare provision, information needs). The audio-recorded interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using qualitative content analysis with MAXQDA software.ResultsThere were unmet information needs with two factors (time: pre/postoperative and categories of information: general/specific) to be considered. Due to the patients’ description of information, we categorized information into general (different surgical procedures, general nutritional information) and specific (occurring simultaneously with a problem) information. Most patients felt well informed concerning general information. However, it was pointed out that it was not possible to provide complete information preoperatively, as the need for information only arises when there are postoperative (specific) problems. In addition, there seems to be a high demand for specific postoperative information regarding nutrition and nutrition-related problems. However, patients stated that postoperative nutritional counseling is not reimbursed by health insurance funds. The information conveyed in support groups and the exchange of experiences are highly valued by patients. However, some patients describe the information provided within the support groups as unfiltered, frightening or exaggerated.ConclusionOverall, there were unmet information needs. Reimbursement by health insurance funds could increase the use of postoperative nutritional counseling and thus serve existing information needs. Support groups enable an exchange of experiences and therefore offer low-barrier access to information. Cooperation between support groups and healthcare professionals in information provision could be an approach to improving existing information needs or to avoiding the development of information gaps. Furthermore, the development and implementation of a digital solution for (postoperative) information dissemination could be helpful.

Banyaknya pengguna media sosial di Indonesia berpotensi untuk mengendalikan masalah epidemiologi global termasuk obesitas. Apakah grup yang dibentuk di media social, yang terdiri dari orang yang tidak saling mengenal, namun karena adanya kesamaan ketertarikan menurunkan berat badan, akan membantu meningkatkan motivasi anggota-anggota grupnya?. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mencari hubungan dukungan teman di media sosial dengan peningkatan motivasi dalam penurunan berat badan. Penelitian ini bersifat deskriptif analitik, dengan desain cross sectional. Sampel berjumlah 110 orang yang dipilih menggunakan teknik purposive sampling. Instrumen penelitian diadopsi dari Treatment Self-Regulation Questionnaire (TSRQ) dan kuesioner Ballatine. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan 88,2% responden adalah perempuan, 85,5% berusia 20-40 tahun, sebagian besar ibu rumah tangga (50,9%), periode bergabung dengan kelompok pada media sosial antara 1-4 bulan (45,5%) . Sekitar 49,1% responden merasa sangat didukung dan termotivasi oleh anggota dalam sesama grup di media sosial. Hasil uji statistik menunjukkan bahwa ada hubungan antara dukungan sosial dengan motivasi penurunan berat badan (pValue 0,019). Studi ini menunjukkan bahwa grup di media sosial dapat membantu menjaga motivasi anggota mereka untuk melaksanakan diet. Dianjurkan agar tenaga promosi kesehatan menggunakan media sosial sebagai alternatif konsultasi, edukasi program-program kesehatan. Kata kunci: Dukungan sosial, Kelompok Diet, Obesitas, Media Sosial SOCIAL SUPPORT FOR DIET COMMUNITIES IN SOCIAL MEDIAThe number of users of social media in Indonesia has the potential to control global epidemiological problems including obesity. Does the group formed on social media, that consists of people who do not know each other, but because of the similarity of interest in losing weight, will help increase the motivation of the group members? The purpose of this study was to find a relationship between friend support on social media with increased motivation in weight loss. This research is descriptive analytic, with cross sectional design. A sample of 110 people was selected using a purposive sampling technique. The research instrument was adopted from the Treatment Self-Regulation Questionnaire (TSRQ) and the Ballatine questionnaire. The results showed 88.2% of respondents were women, 85.5% were aged 20-40 years, most were housewives (50.9%), the period of joining groups on social media between 1-4 months (45.5%). About 49.1% of respondents felt strongly supported and motivated by members in fellow groups on social media. The statistical test results show that there is a relationship between social support and motivation for weight loss (pValue 0.019). This study shows that groups on social media can help maintain the motivation of their members to carry out a diet. It is recommended that health promotion personnel to use social media as an alternative to disseminating health program information.
