Fabrication of Multscale Fractal-Like Structures by Controlling Fluid Interface Instability

Abstract: Nature, in quest for the best designs has shaped its vital systems into fractal geometries. Effectual way of spontaneous fabrication of scalable, ordered fractal-like structures by controlling Saffman-Taylor instability in a lifted Hele-Shaw cell is deployed here. In lifted Hele-Shaw cell uncontrolled penetration of low-viscosity fluid into its high-viscosity counterpart is known to develop irregular, non-repeatable, normally short-lived, branched patterns. We propose and characterize experimentally anisotropi… Show more

“…These approaches do not lend themselves to producing individual tags that can be read by cell phone but the micro-dendrites could be used as taggant agents in goods and materials, much like coded nanostructures [82]. Finally, there is also the possibility of using the Saffman-Taylor instability, also described earlier, to make large-scale coarse dendrites in a 'lifted Hele-Shaw cell apparatus', in which a viscous fluid is pressed between two plates that are separated at one edge to allow the influx of air which results in a ramified viscous fingering effect [83][84][85].…”

“…Diameter of source-holes in the present study is kept equal to 0.5 mm for all the experiments. Locations of these holes were based on the guidelines given in (Islam and Gandhi 2016) such that we would evolve a square mesh structure after the process is done. The square mesh with several sizes and pitch dimensions are proposed to be prepared.…”

“…The fabrication process of the LMM is shown in Figure 2 (a). The fractal microchannel network was obtained using a bespoke Hele-Shaw apparatus based on Saffman-Taylor instabilities [22]. A thoroughly mixed ceramic suspension was used to create the mold for the fractal channel network [23].…”
