The effect of reduction atmospheres, H2/N2, C3H8/H2/N2, C3H8 and CO, on the structure and propane direct dehydrogenation performance of PtIn/Mg(Al)O/ZnO catalyst derived from ZnO-supported PtIn-hydrotalcite was studied. The physicochemical properties of the as-prepared and used catalytic system were characterized by various characterization methods. The results show that the dehydrogenation performance, especially the stability of the PtIn/Mg(Al)O/ZnO catalyst, was significantly improved along with the change in reduction atmosphere. The highest catalytic activity (51% of propane conversion and 97% propylene selectivity), resistance toward coke deposition, and stability for more than 30 h were achieved with the H2/N2-reduced catalyst. The optimal dehydrogenation performance and coke resistance are mainly related to the high Pt dispersion and In0/In3+ molar ratio, strong Pt–In interaction and small metal particle size, depending on the nature of the reduction atmospheres. The reconstruction of meixnerite favors the stability and coke resistance to some extent.

Compared with dehydrogenation in conventional petroleum refinery processes, relatively pure hydrogen can be produced by propane dehydrogenation (PDH) without innate contaminants like sulfur and metals. Among the existing catalysts for PDH, Pt catalysts are popular and are often used in conjunction with Sn as a co-catalyst. Coke formation is a major concern in PDH, where catalyst regeneration is typically achieved by periodic coke burning to achieve sustainable operation. In this study, Pt-Sn/Al2O3 catalysts were regenerated after coke burning in three stages: mixing the catalyst with liquid hydrochloric acid, drying, and calcining under air atmosphere. In this process, the optimum concentration of hydrochloric acid was found to be 35% w/w. HCl treatment was effective for enhancing redispersion of the metal catalysts and aiding the formation of the Pt3Sn alloy, which is considered to be effective for PDH reaction. HCl treatment may provide oxychlorination-like conditions under the calcination atmosphere. The characteristics of the catalysts were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and CO chemisorption.

Recently, the propane dehydrogenation (PDH) to propylene has become one of the most promising and attractive techniques for the production of propylene because the success of the large‐scale exploitation of shale gas can supply an abundance of cheap propane for this process. Al2O3 is usually used as a support for PtSn catalysts to withstand the harsh reaction environment in the PDH process. However, due to the formation of coke and thermal agglomeration of metal particles, the PtSn catalyst suffers severe deactivation. Therefore, spinel supports are rationally designed with different morphologies (sphere, sheet, and rod) to stabilize the PtSn catalyst in the PDH. Specifically, the rod‐like spinel support exhibits a larger pore size and suitable interaction with PtSn nanoparticles shows an excellent C3H8 conversion rate of 43.2% and a C3H6 selectivity of 95.0% with an extremely low deactivation rate of 0.005 h−1 for the cycle test, standing as one of the best PDH catalysts reported to date and outperforming the commercial PtSn/Al2O3 catalysts. Besides, this catalyst is compatible with the industrial process to achieve scalable production.
