To achieve increased flow and reduce fouling, polymeric membranes can be functionalized with hydrophilic groups such as sulfone, amines, and others. This research has aimed at the sulfonation of Polysulfone (PSU) with various agents and at varying substitution degrees to change its hydrophobic character. PSU was also blended with Poly(lactic acid) (PLA), which is a more hydrophilic polymer. The phase inversion method was used to make PSU, PLA, sulfonated PSU, and PSU/PLA blend-based membranes. Sulfonation degrees of sulfonated PSU membranes were assessed using FT-IR, mechanical characteristics of membranes were determined, and thermal properties of membranes were clarified using DSC and TGA techniques. Hydrophilic natures and membrane alterations were investigated, as well as contact angle and water uptake measures. Among three distinct sulfonation agents (trimethylsilyl chlorosulfonate (TMSCS), sulfuric acid, and chlorosulfonic acid) employed to produce a 20% sulfonation degree of polysulfone, TMSCS was chosen as having the highest sulfonation efficiency (91.5%). With increasing sulfonation degree, a drop in molecular weight was seen in all sulfonated polysulfone samples. The mechanical strength values of polysulfone after sulfonation with TMSCS rose from 35.23 MPa to 63.35 MPa, while the contact angle value decreased from 85.58° to 71°. The contact angle value reduced from 85.58° to 64.68° while the mechanical strength of the PSU and PSU/PLA (50:50) blend increased from 35.23 MPa to 39.3 MPa. Membranes were also tested for pure water flux, hydrostability, and biostability. In terms of application requirements, it was determined that sulfonated PSU-based membranes manufactured with TMSCS with a 20% sulfonation degree and PSU/PLA blend-based membranes with a 50:50 (w:w) ratio have the optimum compositions with high flux quantities.

Textile dyeing wastewater involving resistant dyestuffs contaminate rivers because of their color and the production of hazardous or carcinogenic intermediates, which must be removed before being released into streams. The ligninolytic enzymes have many uses, including the elimination of dyestuffs from industrial wastewater. In this study, the Lignin Peroxidase enzyme was used to eliminate synthetic solutions of Naphthol Blue Black (NBB) and Remazol Brilliant Blue R (RBBR) dyestuffs at pH 5.0 and 30 °C. In addition, the effect of 1-hydroxybenzotriazole (HOBt), a redox mediator, on dye removal at different concentrations was investigated. Once a redox mediator was added to the LiP enzyme, the percentage of RBBR dye eliminated increased from 10% to 26% after 24 hours. On the first day after adding HOBt to the LiP enzyme, the percentage of NBB dye eliminated increased from 5% to 89%. The effect of HOBt was significantly greater in the NBB than in the RBBR. The redox mediator-added Lignin Peroxidase enzyme decolorized the NBB dye more efficiently than the RBBR dye.
The aim of this work is to fabricate tubular nanocellulose-based nano ber pressure retarded osmosis (PRO) by electrospinning. The PRO process requires high performance, high ux, high rejection and resistant membranes under harsh conditions. Because conventional phase-inversion membranes are not su cient to perform the required water ux. Because of this reason, alternative membrane fabrication methods need to be develop. Recently, lots of studies are carried out to fabricate strong enough nano ber pressure retarded osmosis membranes which are resistant higher pressure pressure while providing high ux and high rejection rates. In this study, cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) added PAN nanocomposite nano ber PRO membranes successfully fabricated by tailor made electrospinning equipment. According to the Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), FT-IR, Dynamic Mechanical Analysis, Porometer and Contact Angle analysis results, it is concluded that PAN and CNC provided a complete mixture and the addition of CNC increased the mechanical strength in the PAN membranes which is the crucial phenomena in PRO applications.In this study, the newly fabricated membrane achieves a higher PRO water ux of 405.38 LMH with using a 1 M NaCl and a DI as feed water. The corresponding salt ux is found as 2.10 gMH which is higher than our previous study (Pasaoglu et al., 2020). The selectivity of the reversed ux represented by the ratio of the water ow to the reversed salt ux (Jw/ Js) was able to be kept as high as 193.03 L/g for PRO operation.As far as we know, the performance of the work developed membrane in this study has shawn better performance than all PRO membranes reported in the literature previously.
