Fabrication of high-performance facilitated transport membranes for CO2separation

Abstract: At present, liquid membranes, ion-exchange membranes and fixed carrier membranes are the three popular facilitated transport membranes for CO2 separation. We report a method to combine their advantages and overcome their deficiencies.

“…The reactions involved in the synthesis of Zn-cyclen are presented in equation 6 [21]. (6) At the end of the reaction the product was separated from the solution using vacuum filtration and then washed several times with absolute ethanol. H NMR 400 and MS were used to verify the completion of the reaction.…”

“…amino groups). In FSC membranes the carriers have restricted mobility, hence the stability is no longer an issue, but the gas diffusivity (and thus permeability) in these membranes is 2-3 orders of magnitude lower than that in a mobile carrier membrane [4][5][6][7][8][9]. Several different mechanisms had been proposed to explain the reversible reaction involved in the CO 2 facilitated transport in a FSC membrane.…”

“…Then the stable high-speed facilitated transport channels were established in the membrane via grafting to the amino group-rich polymer matrix using a molecular bridge of APTES, which not only combined the advantages of mobile carrier membranes and fixed carrier membranes but also circumvented the disadvantages of them. Therefore, the membrane showed an extremely high CO 2 permeance of 5693 GPU with the favorable CO 2 /gas selectivity at 1.1 bar and 298 K. facilitated transport membrane containing high-speed facilitated transport channels [306].…”

“…These contaminants could possibly affect the performance of facilitated transport membranes via degrading carriers, competitive sorption with CO 2 or competitive reaction with CO 2 . Therefore, effects of various potential impurities on facilitated transport membranes containing amino groups and carbonate groups have been widely investigated by several research groups [284,291,[305][306][307][308]. According to these studies, there was a negative effect of minor contaminants on membrane performances observed.…”

“…The FTMs involve reversible reactions between reactive carriers incorporated in the membrane material and a target gas molecule (here CO 2 ), and this interaction controls the gas transport rate across the membrane [28][29][30]. In various industrial processes which involve CO 2 , most feed streams are saturated with water vapor, hence CO 2 permeation will be exposed to a competitive sorption of water in the membranes [6].…”
