Fabrication of eco-friendly graphene-based superhydrophobic coating on steel substrate and its corrosion resistance, chemical and mechanical stability

Abstract: Superhydrophobic coatings were successfully fabricated on steel substrates using potentiostatic electrodeposition of Ni and Ni-graphene, Ni-G, coatings followed by immersion in an ethanolic solution of stearic acid, SA. Rice straw, an environmentally friendly biomass resource, was used to synthesize high-quality graphene. The Raman spectra proved the high quality of the produced graphene. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, FTIR, results showed that the Ni coating grafted with stearic acid, Ni-SA, and… Show more

“…Figure 1 b shows the SEM image of copper coated with Ni-G-M, the surface features micro-nano structures in the shape of cauliflowers. Graphene could serve as a nucleation site to improve the nucleation rate, so it improves surface roughness, which is the primary requirement for superhydrophobicity 31 . To assess the wettability of the bare and coated copper by Ni, Ni-G, Ni-MA, and Ni-G-MA, the CAs were evaluated.…”

“…The deposited nickel coating can offer unique advantages, such as self-cleaning and superior corrosion resistance when combined with superhydrophobicity 30 . Graphene is a honeycomb-like carbon allotrope with a two-dimensional structure 31 . One of the most astonishing nanomaterials is graphene, which is the thinnest and one of the most durable carbon-based structures.…”

“…4a,b, are characterized by capacitive depressed semicircles signifying that steel corrosion is due to the charge transfer process 7 . The depressing characteristics may be attributed to the inhomogeneities and the surface www.nature.com/scientificreports/ roughness of the steel [30][31][32][33] . As the concentration of extracts increases, the diameter of the semicircles increases, so the corrosion rate decreases.…”

“…Artificial superhydrophobic, SHP, materials with sufficient surface roughness and low surface energy have successfully been produced inspired by the lotus effect 1 , 2 . SHP surfaces with water contact angles more than 150° and water slide angles less than 10° have acquired extensive attention due to their vast array of potential uses, such as anticorrosion 3 , oil–water separation 4 , self-cleaning 5 , anti-icing 6 , antifouling 7 , biomedicine 8 , and drag reduction 9 . Various methods were utilized to manufacture bio-inspired SHP surfaces, including chemical vapor deposition 10 , chemical etching 11 , 3D printing 12 , sol-gel 13 , electrospinning 14 , anodization 15 , spraying 16 , and electrodeposition 17 .…”
