Fabrication of Csf/Mg Composites Using Extrusion Directly Following Vacuum Infiltration - Part 2: Forming Process Study

Abstract: Extrusion directly following vacuum infiltration is a special forming technique that combines the advantages of liquid metal infiltration and semisolid extrusion. The major advantages of this process are elimination of porosity and shrinkage, good surface finish, good dimensional accuracy, high strength to weight ratio and near net shaping. Magnesium matrix composites are fabricated usually through stirring casting, powder forming, injecting deposition, liquid metal infiltration or die casting at present time.… Show more

“…The liquid-solid infiltration extrusion process is a new process for the forming metal matrix composites proposed by our research group [11,12]. The characteristics of this process is that the semi-solid metal is uniformly infiltrated into the carbon fiber preform in a vacuum environment and solidified under high pressure.…”

“…This technique combines the advantages of squeeze casting and gas pressure infiltration method by integrates melting, vacuum infiltration and extrusion forming, which exerts great promise for the fabrication of Mg or Al matrix composite. C f /Mg composites and C f /Al composites have been successfully fabricated by LSEVI [1,5,[14][15][16][17]. In the present paper, 2D-C f /Mg composites were fabricated by LSEVI.…”

“…High temperature and oxygen-enriched atmosphere during liquid infiltration might degrade the performance of the composites. Liquid-solid extrusion following vacuum pressure infiltration technique (LSEVI) [14] is a new technique for the fabrication of metal matrix composite. “…The traditional manufacturing methods for mental matrix composites are not suitable to it. For this reason, extrusion following vacuum infiltration process [2] has been developed on the basis of the combination of squeeze casting [3] , vacuum pressure infiltration [4] and liquid metal extrusion [5] , which can be used to align the carbon fibers and eliminate micro-defects. However, the process involves many process parameters, and forming process is also complicated, which needs lots of experimental and theoretical study.…”
