Natural zeolites in the Aksitero sedimentary formation of the western Luzon area of the Philippines were evaluated. The natural washed zeolite (NW-Z) was preconditioned with acid to purify it and increase its surface area. Acid treatment with 3 M HCl for 12 h yielded optimum acid treatment of the NW-Z, causing increases in the Si/Al ratio, the specific surface area by 32.5% and the porosity of the acid-treated zeolite (HC-Z). The HC-Z was washed with 4 M NaCl for 3, 6, 12, 18, 24, 48 and 72 h to improve its cation-exchange capacity for copper. The sodium-treated zeolite (Na-Z) was immersed in 100 ppm CuSO4 solution to test the copper-uptake capacity. Pretreatment of HC-Z with 4 M NaCl for 24 h is optimal for sodium treatment of the preconditioned HC-Z. The preconditioning techniques did not significantly alter the structure and morphology of the zeolite samples. It is suggested that the preconditioned Philippine natural zeolite samples are readily available for further functionalization that will enhance their antibacterial, catalytic and adsorption properties, with various useful applications in the field of catalysis, biomedicine, environmental mitigation and wastewater treatment.

Studies have previously been done on efficacies of chitosan and zeolite in ammonium ion (NH 4 + ) removal. However, no study compares the adsorption performance of natural zeolite (NZ) and activated NZ (ANZ) with high molecular weight chitosan (HMWC) and low molecular weight chitosan (LMWC).Hence, this study investigates the potentials of NZ, ANZ, LMWC, and HMWC in NH 4 + removal. The characteristics of NZ, ANZ, LMWC, and HMWC such as functional groups, surface morphology, elemental composition, zeta potential, and particle size was also investigated. The deposition of NH 4 + on the surface of NZ and ANZ was confirmed with the absence of nitrogen by the adsorption spectrum of energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and supported by the presence of an Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) stretching band at 3,500-3,300 cm −1 , as well as broader and less intense bands~1,600 cm −1 after the adsorption for all the adsorbents. The particle size of LMWC, HMWC, NZ, and ANZ were 98, 813, 22,354, and 9,826 nm, respectively. Meanwhile, after the activation process, the composition of O, Si, Al, Fe, Ca, and Na was reduced. NH 4 + batch adsorption was also studied. HMWC, NZ, and ANZ reached adsorption equilibrium at 15 h, meanwhile for LMWC, the equilibrium reached at t = 20 h. The adsorption capacity of LMWC, HMWC, NZ, and ANZ at an initial concentration of 50 mg/L was 0.769, 0.331, 2.162, and 2.937 mg/g, respectively.

Antibacterial Activity of Copper-Loaded Plasma-Treated Natural Zeolites

Copper-exchanged zeolites (CuZ) were prepared through ion exchange at varying concentrations of copper chloride (CuCl 2) solutions. The samples were tested for their antimicrobial activity against representative microorganisms of Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative Escherichia coli. Enhanced ion exchange capacity of natural zeolite was achieved by irradiating sodium-exchanged zeolite (NaZ) with 13.56-MHz radiofrequency argon (Ar) discharged for 20 min at 25 W power. We compared the Cu uptake of pristine and plasma-treated samples soaked in 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 mM CuCl 2 solutions using when NaZ was treated with Ar plasma. The physical effect of plasma treatment was observed under a scanning electron microscope. We found, in particular, that the Ar gas discharge was able to etch through the surface of the zeolite samples, creating more active sites for ion ex-Cu into the zeolite framework by the appearance of inhibition zones in the E. coli and S. aureus cultures, an indication of antimicrobial activity due to the presence of Cu and its oxides.
