Fabrication of a Simple and Cheap Screen‐printed Silver/Silver Chloride (Ag/AgCl) Quasi‐reference Electrode

Abstract: In this work, a silver/silver chloride ink is fabricated using two steps. First the silver ink is prepare using silver, nail polish and acetone. Then the silver ink is painted in a paper substrate and a silver chloride layer is deposited using a bleach solution. The result is the silver/ silver chloride conductive ink. The silver ink is cheap ($2.49/g), well-dispersive and very easy to fabricate. The materials were characterized by SEM and XRD. The Ag ink showed the formation of a continuous network throughout… Show more

“…The electrode was then coated with a nail polish as an insulator to limit the working area. Silver NP ink (Ag ink, 0.1 μL) was coated on the RE position and sintered at 70 °C for 3 h, followed by dropping 0.5 M sodium hypochlorite (NaClO, 10 μL) for chlorination and rinsing to obtain a pseudo silver/silver chloride (p-Ag/AgCl) RE . Finally, 0.05% (w/v) Nafion (0.1 μL) was drop-cast to modify the working electrode (WE).…”

“…Since the RE is responsible for providing a constant potential and is an integral part of measuring and controlling the WE's potential, stable Ag ink was chosen for both the RE and conductive circuits to ensure sensor stability. [32][33][34] The resulting reference electrode area was 5 mm 2 . Aer printing, the drying process was performed at 120 °C for 30 minutes.…”

“…Initially, the synthesized AuNPs were immobilized on the SPE surface via physical adsorption. Graphite and silver inks were prepared according to the procedure outlined in our previous studies [21,22]. The fabrication and characterization of the SPE are described in detail in our previous work [23].…”
