Fabrication of a Biomass-Based Hydrous Zirconium Oxide Nanocomposite for Preferable Phosphate Removal and Recovery

Abstract: Advanced removal of phosphate by low-cost adsorbents from municipal wastewater or industrial effluents is an effective and economic way to prevent the occurrence of eutrophication. Here, we proposed a novel method to immobilize hydrous zirconium oxide nanoparticle within quaternary-aminated wheat straw, and obtained an inexpensive, eco-friendly nanocomposite Ws-N-Zr. The biomass-based Ws-N-Zr exhibited higher preference toward phosphate than commercial anion exchanger IRA-900 when competing sulfate ions coexis… Show more

“…Ad istinct peak shift to lower binding energy was observed for fluoride-loaded AF-Zr samples.T he expanded full width at half maximum (FWHM) values of about 2.35 eV,s uggests the presence of an ew fluoride complex. [21] Thef luoride adsorption to the CAF-Zr membrane can lead to the new double-peak formation at about 182.9 eV and 185.2 eV,and is ascribed to the robust Zr-F complex [20b] and the large band shifts of about 0.5 eV confirm the powerful adsorption of fluoride ions.Onthe other hand, for SO 4 2À ions, the negligible Zr 3d binding energy variations indicate aw eak adsorption. In contrast, the peak B( ca.…”

“…Some wastes have been applied for pollutants adsorption in wastewater, including okara, wheat straw and aspen wood fiber, and so on. (Eberhardt, Min, & Han, 2006;Nguyen et al, 2013;Qiu et al, 2015). It does not only reduce the pollution with lower cost but also reach the aim of waste reuse and recycle.…”

“…The hybrid of calcium alginate with hydrous zirconium oxide (ZO) has been reported for removal of Cr(VI) (as anionic species) from aqueous phase via surface complexation (between protonated OH groups on ZO under acidic conditions) and partial reduction of Cr(VI) oxyanions by reducing groups on alginate . Like other hydrous oxides, ZO has complex surface properties depending on its chemical environment . ZO is amphoteric, inexpensive, sparingly soluble in water, and stable .…”
