Fabrication and oxidation resistance of mullite/yttrium silicate multilayer coatings on C/SiC composites

Abstract: Abstract:A tri-layer coating of mullite/Y 2 Si 2 O 7 /(70wt%Y 2 Si 2 O 7 +30wt%Y 2 SiO 5 ) was prepared on carbon fiber reinforced silicon carbide (C/SiC) composite substrate through dip-coating route for the sake of improving oxidation resistance of C/SiC composites. An Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 sol with high solid content was selected as raw material for mullite, and a slurry of Y 2 O 3 powder filled silicone resin was used to synthesize yttrium silicate. The microstructure, phase composition, and oxidation resistance… Show more

“…In recent years, with increased demand on natural gas, and the aspiration to strengthen national energy security and increase energy efficiency, the production of synthetic natural gas (SNG) from coal or biomass has aroused widespread concern [9][10][11][12][13]. Being a good potential material, SiC has extensive applications in many fields, especially working in harsh environments as a support due to its excellent properties including high heat conductivity, thermal stability, mechanical strength, and chemical inertness [14][15][16][17][18][19]. SiC has been applied to various reactions, including methane reforming and combustion, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, isomerization and dehydrogenation, among others [20,21].…”

“…However, since a large amount of gas products, such as CO 2 and CO, are released during the oxidation of SiC, large bubbles formed will expose a fresh surface after bursting, and channels for oxygen diffusion will also be formed, which will reduce the protective effect of the glass lm [23]. As one of multitudinous silicides, MoSi 2 is a kind of material with dual characteristics of metal and ceramic, and it is able to produce a continuous SiO 2 glass layer to protect its substrate from oxidation at temperatures as high as 1700 ℃ [24]. As a result, it has already been used in the preparation of electric heating elements.…”

“…In despite of some advantages such as low density, low thermal expansion, desirable thermal stability, and oxidation resistance [1][2][3][4][5][6], the inherent brittle fracture behavior limits the structural applications of mullite ceramics. Incorporating the second phases can improve the fracture toughness of monolithic mullite.…”
