Fabrication and Anti-Oxidation Ability of SiC-SiO2 Coated Carbon Fibers Using Sol-Gel Method

Abstract: The paper proposed a method to improve the anti-oxidation performance of carbon fibers (CF) at high temperature environment by coating silicon dioxide (SiO2) and silicon carbide (SiC). The modified sol-gel method had been used to ensure the proper interface between fibers and coating. We used polydimethylsiloxane and ethyl orthosilicate to make stable emulsion to uniformly disperse SiC nanoparticles. The modified SiO2/SiC coating had been coated on CF successfully. Compared with the untreated CF, the coated fi… Show more

“…This made the scattering of x-ray at each diffraction plan slightly rotated based on the favourite of SiO 2 . The shifting in the diffracting plane of treated powder was in agreement with the findings of the literature [37][38][39][40]. In addition, there was a small increase in the intensity of peak (111) at 35.61°2θ.…”

“…Wang et al 15 synthesized Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 -TiO 2 coatings on the fiber surface of 3-D reinforcements and studied the effect of the thickness on the mechanical properties of composites. Yang et al 16 fabricated SiC-SiO 2 coatings and investigated their ablation mechanism on the carbon fiber surfaces. Ratnayake et al 17 prepared boron-doped yttriastabilized ZrO 2 surface coatings on polyacrylonitrile-based carbon fibers and examined the thermal behavior.…”

“…Ratnayake et al 17 prepared boron-doped yttriastabilized ZrO 2 surface coatings on polyacrylonitrile-based carbon fibers and examined the thermal behavior. Typical preparation processes for these coatings include chemical vapor deposition, 9 chemical vapor infiltration, 14 precursor infiltration and pyrolysis, 8,10 and sol-gel 11,12,[15][16][17] methods. In contrast, the sol-gel method requires a straightforward preparation process, low cost, and high suitability for coating on different substrates, which is a potential method for development.…”
