Fabric and Garment Drape Measurement - Part 1

Abstract: This paper aims to make a comprehensive review of measurement methods developed for evaluating fabric and garment drape. Drapemeters used for evaluating drapeability since Pierce's bending length tester are reviewed. Parameters proposed for measuring drapeability are also considered. The authors propose that using flat fabric methods does not accurately reflect the drape of fabrics when worn. The paper is a pre-cursor to a new image analysis technique which will be reported in Part 2.

“…a testing device called a Drapemeter [18] -during which a fabric specimen is allowed to fall under its own weight. Sanad et al [19] provide a comprehensive overview of measurement methods that have been developed during the past decades for evaluating fabric drape. Instruments include static, dynamic, photovoltaic and alternative drapemeters.…”

“…Normally, drape is subjectively evaluated by textile and apparel workers in the design and manufacturing industry [ 9 ], but the result of this method varies greatly with different individuals and lacks of reproducibility. To find an efficient, accurate and reliable method to reflect the drape property, lots of effort and improvements have been made to interpret drape quantitatively.…”

“…This method involved a camera and a beam of parallel light to capture the projection of draped fabric and a set of software to process the projection image. By means of image analysis the detailed data of drape property such as drape shape parameters and statistical information including drape wave amplitude, wave length and number of nodes were developed and computed from drape profile image [ 9 ]. Image analysis method takes less time, independent of operator, and has a better repeatability with more parameters and makes it possible to investigate time dependence of drape coefficient [ 18 ].…”

“…Image analysis was then carried out on the images captured by camera from below the garments suspended on a mannequin. They proved conclusively that there was a very poor correlation between fabric and garment drape values. They went on to derive an equation to predict drape rank scores for garments depending on circularity and wavelength minimum [121][122][123]. Importantly existing tests of drape use templates which do not represent cross section of the body at even key locations.…”
