FABP 2 gene polymorphism and metabolic syndrome in elderly people of Croatian descent

Abstract: Introduction:Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a multifactorial disorder in which dyslipidemia plays an important role. Fatty acid-binding protein 2 (FABP 2) is responsible for transport of free fatty acids in the intestinal endothelium cells. FABP2-genetic variants might affect plasma lipid concentrations and intracellular lipid transport. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between FABP2 Ala54Thr genetic polymorphism and metabolic syndrome and some biochemical and anthropological parameters i… Show more

“…The between-study heterogeneity may have arisen for one of the following reasons. First, different diagnostic criteria for MetS: IDF (Csép et al, 2007;Turkovic et al, 2012), American Heart Association/National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (AHA/NHLBI) (Yamada et al, 2008;Oguri et al, 2009); and Adult Treatment Panel III guidelines (ATPIII) (Vimaleswaran et al, 2006;Miller et al, 2007). Second, ethnicity differences; the T allele frequencies of controlsubject Croatians, Indians, Romanians, Han Chinese, and Japanese were 0.224, 0.269, 0.281, 0.297, and 0.329, respectively.…”

“…Third, selection bias; the differences in age and gender distributions among the studies included and the difference in sample content might also contribute to the heterogeneity. The age of the control subjects ranged from our 52.1 to 78.8 (Turkovic et al, 2012), and sample sizes ranged from 73 (Yamada et al, 2008) to 1114 (Oguri et al, 2009).…”

“…The protein is encoded by FABP2 gene located on chromosomal region 4q28-q31, the gene is approximately 3.4Kb long and contains four exons interrupted by three introns [12]. A number of polymorphisms have been described in the gene to affect various metabolic phenotypes but the most extensively studied polymorphism Ala54Thr (rs1799883) has been reported to be associated particularly with type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, stroke, cardiovascular disorders, atherosclerosis, metabolic syndrome, and obesity [13][14][15][16][17][18][19]. “…In contrast, other studies report no association with the same parameters [20,28,39]. The contradictory results among the different studies may come from the different dietary habits of the analyzed populations [32,41]. Thr-containing protein has been shown to have 2-fold greater affinity for long-chain fatty acids than does Ala-containing protein which may lead to increase absorption and processing of fatty acids [7].…”
