The purpose of this study was to evaluate the proportion of eyelid tumors, compare the clinical diagnosis with histopathological diagnosis in all possible cases in a tertiary eye hospital over a 5-year period. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective chart review was performed for patients with eyelid tumors from June 2009 to June 2014.Data were collected and analyzed on location of tumor, types of treatment, and pathologic findings. Histopathological diagnosis of benign and malignant tumors was stratified based on age, gender and tumor location. RESULTS: Total number of 235 patients was evaluated of which, 216 (91.9%) cases were benign and 19(8.1%) cases were malignant neoplasms. Most common benign tumors included epidermal cyst(30.5%), nevi (17.5%), dermoid cyst (13.8%) and papilloma (6.5%).Most frequent malignant tumors included Sebaceous gland carcinoma (SGC) (31.6%), Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) (26.3%), Squamous cell carcinoma (21%), Malignant melanoma (10.5%), Merkel cell carcinoma(5.3%) and Lymphoma (5.3%).Most common site for malignancy was lower lid followed by upper lid. BCC recurred in 1case in lower lid. CONCLUSION: Epidermal cyst, nevi, dermoid cyst and papilloma are the most common benign lesions and SGC is the most common malignant lesion. Recurrence is a feature of BCC in lower lid.

Purpose:The purpose of this study was to evaluate the demographics and clinical features of eyelid masses in a tertiary eye hospital over a 10-year period.Materials and Methods:A retrospective chart review was performed for patients admitted with eyelid tumors from 2000 to 2010. Data were collected and analyzed on the demographic features, location of the tumor, types of treatment, and pathologic findings.Results:A total number of 182 patients were evaluated of which, 82 cases were benign and 100 cases were malignant neoplasms. The most common benign tumors included melanocytic nevi (35%), papilloma (19.5%), and cysts (11%). The most frequent malignant tumors included basal cell carcinoma (BCC) (83%), squamous cell carcinoma (8%) and sebaceous gland carcinoma (6%). The most common site for malignancy was the lower lid followed by the upper lid. BCC recurred in 16 cases that were most frequent in the lower lid.Conclusion:Melanocytic nevus, papilloma and cysts are the most common benign lesions and BCC is the most common malignant lesion in the eyelids. Recurrence is a feature of BCC especially in the lower lid.

Chalazion is one of the most common eyelid masses seen by ophthalmologists in outpatient clinics. It presents with slowly growing painless cystic lesion affecting eyelids. Chalazion arises due to obstruction of the meibomian gland ducts leading to retained secretion. The exact incidence of chalazion is variable among the studies and it differs depending on certain predisposing factors. Many factors ae known to predispose to chalazion formation including hormonal changes during puberty and pregnancy, viral and bacterial infection, rosacea, exposure to air pollutants, poor eyelid hygiene, chronic blepharitis, seborrheic dermatitis, eyelid trauma, immune deficiency states, eyelid trauma, hyperlipidemia, tuberculosis, and leishmaniasis. This article will review these factors as well as the incidence of chalazion.
