“…11 Our research is supported by the literature showing that 1) EHR prediction models can accurately identify eye conditions of interest 12 ; 2) specific eye symptoms are associated with asVTD 13 ; and 3) specific eye and health history components are associated with asVTD but not with other anterior segment eye disease. 8,13 The goal of this research was to gain the knowledge to then create EHR-integrated software used by PCPs to determine the risk of asVTD in patients with eye complaints. This study focused on asVTD, given the complexity and diversity of potential eye complaints and resulting asVTDs.…”

“…Machine learning techniques augmented by EHR data extraction methods are a well-established tool to identify patient cohorts and create prediction models ready for clinical application. 11 Our research is supported by the literature showing that 1) EHR prediction models can accurately identify eye conditions of interest 12 ; 2) specific eye symptoms are associated with asVTD 13 ; and 3) specific eye and health history components are associated with asVTD but not with other anterior segment eye disease. 8,13 The goal of this research was to gain the knowledge to then create EHR-integrated software used by PCPs to determine the risk of asVTD in patients with eye complaints.…”

“…This finding highlights a well-established practice pattern, namely, to urgently triage patients presenting with reports of “flashes and floaters” due to the urgent nature of the potential retinal aetiologies. Conversely, there is no anterior segment-related clinical history equivalent of “flashes and floaters” to indicate the urgency of anterior segment disease [ 28 ]. Further exploration, therefore, is needed to determine the extent to which virtual triage status can be determined with survey information alone.…”

“…Adapting existing triage questions to focus on areas which represent key contact lens related symptoms e.g. eye pain, redness, glare, would help identify the presence and determine the urgency of anterior segment disease [12].…”
