Abstract:Carbon fibre reinforced polymer composites offer significant improvement in overall material strength to weight, when compared with metals traditionally used in engineering. As a result, they are replacing metals where overall weight is a significant consideration, such as in the aerospace and automotive industries. However, due to their laminate structure, delamination is a prime concern. Through-thickness stitching has been shown to be a relatively simple method of improving resistance to delamination. scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
