Extremely low frequency electromagnetic field reduces oxidative stress during the rehabilitation of post-acute stroke patients

Abstract: The ELF-EMF therapy meaningfully improves the overall condition of patients through a decrease of oxidative stress markers and it significantly affects the psychophysical abilities of patients after stroke. The change in carbonyl group level correlates with the change in the degree of physical and mental disability; therefore, it could be a marker for the effectiveness of rehabilitation.

“…Studies on the clinical applications of ELF-EMFs have reported protection against hypoxia and myocardial damage, and increased survival following ischemia-reperfusion [19,20]. ELF-EMFs have also been reported to be effective in enhancing osteogenesis and chondrogenesis in human skeletal stem cells/human bone marrow stromal cells (hSSCs/hBMSCs), with no documented negative effects [21,22].…”

“…Moreover, ELF-EMF promotes cell proliferation, protein synthesis, ion transport, and changes in cellular signal transmission ( Li, 2017 ). Our previous studies have shown that ELF-EMF therapy reduces oxidative stress during rehabilitation of post-acute stroke patients ( Cichoń et al, 2017a , 2018 ). Additionally, our recent research, for the first time focused on the effect of ELF-EMF on the potential factors of brain plasticity, indicate that ELF-EMF therapy increases the generation and metabolism of NO – neurotransmitter regulating neurogenesis, and synaptic plasticity ( Cichoń et al, 2017b ).…”

“…High magnetic intensity, 5 or 7 mT of 40 Hz ELF-MF, significantly increased enzymatic antioxidant activity as compared to results obtained before treatment. The results were correlated with the improvement in functional and mental status of post-stroke patients [86,87]. These data show that ELF-MF is a factor that may both increase the production of ROS and activate organisms' antioxidant machinery in humans.…”
