Extreme Weather Events and the Critical Importance of Anticipatory Adaptation and Organizational Resilience in Responding to Impacts

Abstract: Growing scientific evidence suggests that more frequent and severe weather extremes such as heat waves, hurricanes, flooding and droughts will have an increasing impact on organizations, industries and entire economies. These findings call for the development of theoretical and practical frameworks to strengthen the capacity of organizations to respond to such impacts. Yet despite the need to understand what is required to build anticipatory adaptation and organizational resilience to expected impacts, the org… Show more

“…Despite there is not a widely and accepted definition of organizational resilience, we agree with the authors that consider organizational resilience as an ability, capacity or capability to deal with disruptive events (Mallak, 1997;Hamel and Valikangas, 2003;Starr et al, 2003;Sheffi and Rice Jr., 2005;Jackson, 2007;Tillement et al, 2009;Hollnagel, 2010;LengnickHall et al, 2011;Manyena, 2006;Annarelli and Nonino, 2016;Linnenluecke et al, 2012).…”

“…Various studies have so far examined climate risks for firms, which are linked to potential climatic impacts on firms, on their supply chain network and on their political, economic and natural environment [1,2,4,5,8,[14][15][16]. Thus, it has been argued that climate change may influence businesses in various ways, for example by affecting the reliability of transportation or of water and energy supply, by affecting work productivity, or by inducing changes in political and economic framework conditions [1].…”

“…Thus, it has been argued that climate change can induce various risks for firms, which arise from potential climatic impacts on the firm, on its supply chain network and on its political, economic and natural environment [1][2][3][4][5]. However, data from initial firm surveys on climate adaptation suggest that only a minority of managers is engaging their firms…”

“…Climate change adaptation strategies proposed by the literature on business management primarily result in postponing adaptation for a decade while waiting for new research findings, or reactively adapting organizational assets. Another proposed approach is not to directly undertake adaptation measures, but rather to cover damages through insurance and therefore transfer the risk to a third party, for example through catastrophe bonds (Linnenluecke et al 2012). None of these approaches are appropriate for providers of critical infrastructure, as the default costs would be much too high.…”
