Extreme Wave Generation, Breaking, and Impact Simulations Using Wave Packets in REEF3D

Abstract: On several occasions, freak waves have been observed in the past, some causing severe damage. In order to model such extreme wave conditions, one possibility is to use focused waves of first- or second-order based on irregular sea-state wave spectra. The wave phase is chosen such that the waves focus at a predetermined location and time, but the individual wave components become steep and start breaking before the focus location for large amplitudes. In this study, transient wave packets are used for extreme w… Show more

“…Dispersive high-frequency acoustic waves in water-filled pipes were simulated in Louati and Ghidaoui (2019). Extreme wave generation, breaking and impact were simulated in Bihs, Kamath, Chella and Arntsen (2019b). Efficient wave modelling using non-hydrostatic pressure distribution and free surface tracking was investigated in Bihs, Kamath, Aggarwal and Pakozdi (2019a).…”

“…Here, the time derivatives are solved by applying the third-order accurate Total Variation Diminishing (TVD) Runge-Kutta scheme [5]. The same time discretisation is also used in (6) and (7). Turbulence time advancement is solved using implicit methods due to its source term driven character.…”

“…In [6], the wave generation and absorption were validated and compared to other CFD codes. Bihs et al [7] analysed the generation, propagation and impact of wave packets using REEF3D. Breaking waves and their interaction with a complex jacket structure were investigated by Aggarwal et al [8].…”

“…The REEF3D::CFD module has already been used as numerical wave tank (NWT) [10,11]. The module solves the Navier-Stokes equations with a two-phase fluid model which makes the software able to simulate breaking waves [12][13][14].…”
