Extreme low flow change analysis on the Tysa River within Ukraine

Abstract: In the current conditions of a changing climate, which directly affects the variability of river runoff, it is very important to have the knowledge about the trends of its extreme flow. Extreme low flows, just like floods are causing a significant material damage. The Tysa River has the two periods with the low flow during year. In addition, some years are dry and such years can be observed for several years in a row. This research used the Indicators of Hydrologic Alteration method (IHA) for investigation of … Show more

“…The present investigation employed the mass curve, residual mass curve, and combined graphs. This methodological approach was developed by Gorbachova (2014Gorbachova ( , 2016 and applied to evaluate river flow trends (Bauzha, Gorbachova 2017;Gorbachova et al 2018;Zabolotnia et al 2019;Romanova et al 2019;Melnyk, Loboda 2020;Zabolotnia et al 2022), also including ice dynamics. “…Water is a renewable but limited natural source, an important component of natural ecosystems. As a result of human activity and climate change, growing of the extreme hydrological and meteorological phenomena in their frequency of occurrence, duration and severity are expected (Dai, 2013;Trenberth et al, 2014;Alfieri et al, 2017;Baiardi and Morana, 2021;Gorbachova andKhrystiuk 2021 or Blaškovičová et al, 2022). That may directly or indirectly affects water quality in surface waters.…”

“…Low flows and droughts are being studied from various points of view, e.g., statistical test and trend analysis [7][8][9][10], variations of flow duration and flow duration frequency analysis [11][12][13], and the use of indicators of hydrological alteration [14].…”
