Extreme HBL behavior of Markarian 501 during 2012

Abstract: Aims. We aim to characterize the multiwavelength emission from Markarian 501 (Mrk 501), quantify the energy-dependent variability, study the potential multiband correlations, and describe the temporal evolution of the broadband emission within leptonic theoretical scenarios. Methods. We organized a multiwavelength campaign to take place between March and July of 2012. Excellent temporal coverage was obtained with more than 25 instruments, including the MAGIC, FACT and VERITAS Cherenkov telescopes, the instrume… Show more

“…In blazars with TeV γ-ray emission, electrons should accelerate up to Lorentz factors 10 5 − 10 6 to explain the highest photon energies (e.g. Aleksić 2012; Ahnen et al 2018).…”

“…Mrk 501, the second nearest BL Lac, at z = 0.034 is also an HSP. A number of multi-wavelength campaigns have been coordinated to monitor Mrk 501 in the last ten years (MAGIC Collaboration, et al 2017, 2018d H.E.S.S. Collaboration 2019).…”

“…During the last two decades, multiwavelength observational campaigns have become essential for studies on blazars' nature. Despite several observations collected during this period, we have learned that observed patterns and correlations seemed to vary from object to object, and even for epoch to epoch in the case of one target (e.g., [35][36][37][38]). This is also the case for PKS 2155-304.…”
