Extraspectral Imaging for Improving the Perceived Information Presented in Retinal Prosthesis

Abstract: Retinal prosthesis is steadily improving as a clinical treatment for blindness caused by retinitis pigmentosa. However, despite the continued exciting progress, the level of visual return is still very poor. It is also unlikely that those utilising these devices will stop being legally blind in the near future. Therefore, it is important to develop methods to maximise the transfer of useful information extracted from the visual scene. Such an approach can be achieved by digitally suppressing less important vis… Show more

“…In terms of complex scene understanding, just few SPV studies have been proposed [24,84]. It is well established that in realistic environment, which is made of complex scenes, the observer is forced to select relevant elements [85].…”

“…The remaining three simulation studies in this category focused on low-level visual function ( Bermudez-Cameo, Badias-Herbera, Guerrero-Viu, Lopez-Nicolas, & Guerrero, 2017 ; Al-Atabany, Al Yaman, & Degenaar, 2018 ; Titchener et al., 2018 ). Two of these studies used AR for enhancing an SPV scene: Al-Atabany et al. (2018) using infrared (IR) overlays for counting people/actions in a scene and Bermudez-Cameo et al.…”

“…We have previously explored multispectral imaging approaches [55], but for this work, we propose a typical video stream from a standard portable camera with automatic gain control. The camera will be most likely located on a headset from which information can be passed to a video processor.…”
