Extraskeletal mesenchymal chondrosarcoma arising in adductor magnus with metastatic foci

Abstract: Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma is a rare and aggressive chondrogenic neoplasm arising from the bone or the soft tissue. Mesenchymal chondrosarcomas develop outside the osseous structures in about one-third of cases, and the majority of these occur in the meninges and the brain parenchyma. Intramuscular extraskeletal mesenchymal chondrosarcoma (EMC) is exceedingly rare, with very few cases reported in the literature. Although mesenchymal chondrosarcoma has a high potential for metastasis, there have been no reports… Show more

“…Post-contrast images show diffuse heterogeneous or nodular enhancement. [4] Diagnosis is based on tumor morphology and various immunohistochemical stains. Histologically, the tumor has a bimorphic morphology composed of undifferentiated round blue cells and hyaline cartilage.…”

“…This is a treatment regimen used typically in cases of Ewing's sarcoma. [4] Metastasis from ESMC has been reported to occur in <20% of patients occurring over a period of 10 months-8 years. [6] Pulmonary, bone, and lymph node metastasis are usually seen at the time of diagnosis.…”

“…[ 1 ] Reports of metastasis of MC to unusual sites such as adrenal, pancreas, and thyroid are few in the published literature. [ 2 3 4 5 ] Detection of adrenal metastasis on PET/CT in case of extraskeletal MC is however not reported. Histopathologic evidence of the adrenal metastasis was not achievable as the patient was lost to follow-up; however, the imaging features suggest this possibility given the overall scenario.…”
