Extrapulmonary Small-cell Carcinoma: a Single-institution Experience

Abstract: EPSCC was identified in various sites, with the most common primary site being the uterine cervix. Regardless of the primary site or disease stage, EPSCC of sites other than cervix was usually a fatal disease with a discouraging outcome for various treatment modalities.

“…Pulmonary small-cell carcinoma prognosis is dismal and the outcomes regarding extra-pulmonary disease are equally poor, with 5-year survival rates of 11 to 13% (12)(13)(14)(15). Combined RT and ChT are considered to be the standard approach and surgery is reserved for limited stage initial and range from surgery to isolated or combined RT and ChT (9,10,17).…”

“…Combined RT and ChT are considered to be the standard approach and surgery is reserved for limited stage initial and range from surgery to isolated or combined RT and ChT (9,10,17). Interestingly, attempts have been tried to undergo curative-intent resections first, and the median survival for those who received surgical resection followed by adjuvant treatment was longer than those without resection (12)(13)(14)(18)(19)(20)(21)(22). However, no specific treatment guidelines are available due to the rarity of these tumors.…”

“…Small cell carcinoma most commonly occurs in the lung, but can also in the extrapulmonary sites such as gastrointestinal or genitourinary tract, gynecological systems, the head and neck, and the breast (Haider et al, 2006;Galanis et al, 1997;Kim et al, 2004;Adegbola et al, 2005;Shin et al, 2000). Primary extrapulmonary small cell carcinomas are rare, and their behaviors are somewhat comparable to the small cells of the lung.…”

“…Most patients die of the disease within a few years [7,8]. Distant metastasis occurs in the brain, bone, lung, liver and adrenal gland [2,3,6,8,16,17,20,30]. It is possible that patients with organ-confined tumor may have a long-term survival with early discovery and treatment [8].…”
