Extraperitoneal Laparoscopic Trigonoplasty for Treatment of Vesicoureteral Reflux: Novel Technique Duplicating its Open Counterpart

Abstract: Extraperitoneal laparoscopic trigonoplasty is technically feasible. Results are comparable to open techniques. The major advantage of this procedure is the avoidance of peritoneum. Other advantages include a shorter hospital stay and good cosmesis. More followup is necessary to establish the long-term results.

“…After two reports of its low success in endospcopic/laparoscopic method (4, 11) and the introduction of endoscopic methods, trigonoplasty use was limited. However, recent reports of its high success in neurogenic bladder (15), adult patients (12), and its laparoscopic duplication of open technique (21) showed promising results again.…”

“…Complications included bladder leak, bladder calculus, and bilateral ureteral obstruction, and the risk was highest in children between ages 1 and 4. Laparoscopic trigonoplasty has had a success rate of 93% [48]. These results are inferior to those attained with open surgical correction.…”
