Extraparotid Warthin's Tumor

Abstract: Papillary cystadenoma lymphomatosum (Warthin's tumor) is a benign, slowly growing tumor found almost exclusively in the parotid gland or periparotid lymph nodes. Our experience with 14 cases of extraparotid Warthin's tumor (EPWT) over 22 years is presented. All cases occurred in extraparotid lymph nodes and represented 8.0% of 176 Warthin's tumors accessioned during this time. Fourteen cases of EPWT occurred in 13 patients (seven men and six women) between 41 and 77 years old. Three of the 13 patients (23%) ha… Show more

“…Except for WT, primary salivary gland tumors rarely develop in the lymph nodes of the parotid gland or the cervical lymph nodes. WT is accepted to occur in 8% of cervical lymph nodes (Snyderman et al 1986). In a sense, WT may be more a lesion of the lymph nodes than the salivary glands.…”

“…The rise of a cystadenolymphoma from the minor salivary gland in the buccal mucosa by a 66-year-old woman was also described in 2012 from Iwai T et al [12]. In some cases a Warthin's Tumor was discovered incidentally in the cervical region after neck dissections for malignancies of the head and neck [13]. Also, rarely was described the coexistence of a Warthin's tumor with an internal and external laryngocele in the laryngeal region probably within an embryological malformation of the organ [14].…”

“…Other possible sites are nasopharynx, lacrimal glands, plica semilunaris, eye lid, tonsils, and sweat glands [19][20][21][22][23][24][25] . We have also observed a noteworthy prevalence of parotid lesions.…”

“…In a small subset, WT was accidentally discovered in the assessment of other primary lesions (6.2%). Parotid and extraparotid WT have been included among the possible unexpected surgical or pathological findings in neck dissection for malignancies of the head and neck [25,26] . WT has been considered an indolent benign neoplasm, with very few recurrences after surgical treatment [3,11] .…”
