Extramedullary Multiple Myeloma Presenting as a Pituitary Mass Lesion

Abstract: Intrasellar plasmocytoma though rare, should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a pituitary mass lesion, since associated with different therapeutic and prognostic implications. Physicians should be alert for intrasellar plasma cell tumors in case of well preserved anterior pituitary function in combination with cranial nerve neuropathies and sellar destruction.

“…Based on the present study and previous publications (12,14), intrasellar plasmacytoma should be considered in differential diagnosis with non-functioning pituitary adenoma, particularly in patients exhibiting cranial nerve involvement (especially the abducens nerve) (8), preserved anterior pituitary function, and an aggressive sellar mass on imaging. The distinction between these two types of sellar lesions is of paramount importance for both therapeutic and prognostic reasons (4,14,15).…”
