Extragonadal germ cell tumors in Taiwan

Abstract: The treatment results of our patients with seminomatous EGCT are comparable to those of Western countries. However, the treatment results of patients with nonseminomatous EGCT are not as good. The reason for this discrepancy needs to be explored for a better treatment outcome of for patients in Taiwan with EGCT.

“…The other reasons for suboptimal treatment were poor patient compliance, the concomitant presence of other medical conditions and delayed diagnosis/therapy. Recent studies have also reported suboptimal treatment of a significant number of patients in a similar way to the present study [14,15,16,17]. However, these studies did not assess the quality of the chemotherapeutic management in detail.…”

“…More investigations need to be done to determine whether race is one of the contributors to the poor prognosis of EGCT. Several reports showed that EGCT in mediastina has a worse outcome than EGCT in other sites [15-17]. To our knowledge, there is no report about YST primarily arising in the seminal vesicle.…”

“…In Jay P. Shah’s report, African-Americans had poorer survival compared with Caucasians. Yu-juwei Hse [15] reported the treatment results in Chinese patents with nonseminomatous extragonadal germ cell tumor (NSEGCT) are not as good as in patients in Western countries. Saxman et al [16] reported the experience with chemotherapy in Indians with NSEGCT.…”

“…7,15 Even with optimal treatments, survival varies among different primary sites and can range from five-year survival of 30-40% in the mediastinal EGCTs to 90% in germinoma of the central nervous system. 4,11,16,17 To date, however, published data on the treatment of EGCTs in Canadian patients are scarce.…”
