Burnout and its association with extracurricular activities among medical students in Saudi Arabia

ObjectivesTo assess levels of burnout in medical students, and to explore the influence of extracurricular activities on burnout at a medical school in Saudi Arabia. MethodsThis cross-sectional study was conducted with first to fourth year medical students at King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences (KSAU-HS) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Socio-demographic, burnout level (the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey, MBI-SS) and participation in extracurricular activities data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. Statistical analyses were performed using the Pearson’s chi-square test and binary logistic regression. ResultsFrom the 306 medical students approached, 249 (81.4%) completed the questionnaire. The level of high burnout was 67.1% (n=167). The study revealed that the majority (62.3%, n=155) of students had high levels of cynicism, 58.6% (n=146) had high levels of emotional exhaustion, and 60.2% (n=150) had low levels of professional efficacy. Most of the students (73.5%, n=183) participated in extracurricular activities, and 112 (45%) students were organizers of extracurricular activities. No significant association was found between burnout levels and the frequency of involvement in extracurricular activities (χ2=2.2, df=2, p=0.333). However, students who were organizing extracurricular activities were less likely to have low professional efficacy (OR=0.51, 95% CI: 0.27- 0.96). ConclusionsHigh levels of burnout were reported at this medical school. Although the burnout level is not significantly associated with the frequency of involvement in extracurricular activities, leading and organizing extracurricular activities might result in lower levels of burnout. Therefore, improving the students’ leadership skills should be considered in curriculum planning, and greater emphasis should be placed on the quality of involvement in extracurricular activities rather than the quantity.

This descriptive cross sectional study was conducted to identify the teachers’ & students’ views according to extracurricular activities influencing academic performance of undergraduate medical students. The study period was July 2017 to June 2018.The study was carried out among four phases of undergraduate medical students & teachers of basic science, para clinical & clinical subjects of four (04) government & four (04) non-government selected medical colleges of Dhaka & outside Dhaka. Medical colleges were selected purposively & convenience sampling technique was adopted for data collection. A self-administered semi-structured questionnaire using five points Likert scale were administered on 58 teachers & 1020 students to collect data & an interview schedule was used to conduct in-depth interviews with 15 medical teachers. Study revealed that according to views of the medical students, factors like drug addiction 922(90.6%) & student politics 835(82.0%) were negatively influencing academic performance of undergraduate medical students. On the other hand, factors like indoor-outdoor games 791(77.7%), cultural activities 611(60.0%) & social activities 658(64.7%) were positively influencing on their academic performance. Findings of the students’ views were consistent with the teachers’ views. In-depth interview of the teachers revealed that students should take part in extra-curricular activities alongside their study. But it should be in a balanced way so that they do not hamper their study. Teachers should encourage students to participate in extra-curricular activities. Study recommended that medical campus should be kept free from the unhealthy student politics. Study also recommended to prevent drug addiction, the parents should be aware & the college authority should have adequate monitoring in the student hostels & should strictly implement any measure if required. Background: Medical students are required to develop the ability and clinical skill to carry out the profession. Soft skill is also important to enhance the students' performance when facing a real-life situation in the community. It can be developed through an extracurricular activity which trains positive behavior, time management, and social aspect. This study was aimed to explore the correlation between extracurricular activities and academic performances among medical students in the preclinical phase. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 221 medical students of Udayana University in the preclinical phase. Data were taken from data collecting by the Student Executive Board for Credit Point of Participation, which was the indicator of extracurricular activities and grouped into active and not active. Data were also taken from the Academic Affair's registered data (Grade Point Average (GPA) and gender). GPA was the indicator of academic performance and grouped into good and average. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analysis (Chi-Square Test with Cramer's V) on SPSS version 20 for Windows. Results: From 221 medical students (males 43.9%; females 56.1%), 48% are active participants of extracurricular programs. Fifty-nine medical students had a good GPA and 162 medical students had an average GPA. The mean score of Credit Point of Participation are 116.545±65.79 and GPA is 3.3781±0.282 (out of possible 4). Our study showed a positive correlation between extracurricular activities and academic performance (r=0.2; p=0.003). Conclusions: Medical students who are active participants in extracurricular programs have better academic performance than those who are passive. Extracurricular activities lead to a positive impact on academic achievement because it can decrease any academic stress and tension, which lead to more productivity in their learning.
