Extractions of Y@C60, Ba@C60, La@C60, Ce@C60, Pr@C60, Nd@C60, and Gd@C60 with Aniline

Abstract: Recently many endohedral metallofullerenes such as M@C 74 , M@C 80 , and M@C 82 (M: metal atom) have been successfully isolated by the high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) technique. 1-5 Some M@C 60 were prepared in primary soots by an arc-heating or a laser-vaporization method, 6-9 but the isolation of M@C 60 has not yet been achieved because of the difficulties in extraction; only the extraction of Ca@C 60 with pyridine has been reported so far. 10,11 Recently we found that aniline is a suitable ext… Show more

“…The cage-like B 40 fullerene might be a good sorbent for CO 2 capture and separation due to its unique electronic structure [20]. Additionally, it is well known that C 60 fullerene can be modified by encapsulating a metal atom to form endohedral fullerene [21]. We propose that a small metal atom might also be easily encapsulated into the B 40 cage through the seven-boron ring, which has a radius of 1.95 Å (see Fig.…”

“…C 60 materials with intercalated lanthanide-metal atoms and the endohedral structures in which Ln is encapsulated inside the C 60 cage (Ln@C 60 , where Ln is the lanthanide atom) were first investigated during the past decade, [15][16][17] and their electronic structures were partly clarified. 18,19 Furthermore, an opening of an energy gap at 28 K is suggested by scanning tunneling microscopy of a single C 60 -encapsulated La cluster (i.e., La@C 60 ), 19 which is suggested to be metallic.…”

“…One of the advantages of this technique is that it can be used to produce macroscopic amounts of purified endohedral metal@C 60 . The possibility of a very low-yield production of M@C 60 (M = Y, Ba, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Gd, Ca, Sr) has been reported recently [4], but there has not been sufficient amounts of material produced for the study of the properties of these species in any detail.
