Extraction performance evaluation and theoretical analysis of removal of phenol from oil mixture using a dual‐functionalized ionic liquid: 1‐hydroxyethyl‐3‐methylimidazolium propionate

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Phenol is an important chemical and has many applications in industry. It is mainly produced from coal tar. At present, the commonly used method in industry is caustic washing, which produces a lot of wastewater containing phenolic components, resulting in environmental contamination. Herein, a dual-functionalized ionic liquid, 1-hydroxyethyl-3-methylimidazolium propionate, was synthesized as a candidate for recovering phenol from a coal tar oil mixture. RESULTS:The performance of the ionic liquid … Show more

“…The variation of RE with temperature is shown in Figure . Before the temperature of 308.15 K, the RE of carbazole and indole increases slightly with the increase of temperature, and then the RE decreases with the increase of temperature, which is due to the increase of solubility of carbazole and indole in the oil at a higher temperature. , Considering the extraction operation in industry and energy saving, it is appropriate to perform the extraction process at near room temperature. Therefore, in this work, the temperature 298.15 K was used as the extraction temperature.…”

“…From the point of view of industrial applications, it is crucial to determine an optimal m ILs : m oil with the maximum RE. , Therefore, the mass ratio of the IL [TMG][Ac] to the representative oil from 1.00 to 0.05 was investigated to extract carbazole and indole. The results are presented in Figure .…”

“…Phenolic compounds can be used to synthesize a variety of organic chemicals . Moreover, removal of phenols is helpful in increasing the storage stability of oil products and reducing the hydrogen consumption of subsequent processing. , The extraction is regarded as an effective method for separating phenols from LTCT . It is significant to select a suitable extractant in the extraction process.…”

“…As a consequence of their properties of low volatility, low melting point, high thermal stability and unique adjustable structure, ionic liquids (ILs) are attracting more and more interest for replacing conventional organic solvents in EDS. [24][25][26][27] Various functionalized pyridinium, imidazolium and pyrrolidinium ILs with Lewis and Bronsted acidity have been tested and achieved excellent extraction efficiency. [28][29][30][31] Amongst them, carboxylic acid functionalized ILs are highly promising extractants due to their improved acidity and increased interaction between IL cations and thiophene sulfides.…”
