Extraction of the 1,10-phenanthroline, 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline, and 2,4,6-tripyridyl-sym-triazine complexes of iron(II) into propylene carbonate. Application to the determination of iron in sea water and aluminum alloy

Abstract: Ideally a solvent used to extract a species from an aqueous phase should be colorless, more dense than water, nontoxic, immiscible, and have little tendency to form emulsions. During an investigation aimed at increasing the sensitivity of the iron-phenanthroline method for the determination of sulfur dioxide (7), it was observed that propylene carbonate (4methyl-l,3-dioxolane-2-one) extracted the orange tris(l,10phenanthroline)iron(II) complex rapidly, completely, and neatly. A study was initiated to evaluate … Show more

“…On the other hand, PC was utilized as a diluent in some extraction studies [20,21]. According to our analytical scheme, when PC was used as a diluent it avoided addition of solvent in the tested extract because it allows the organic extraction phase to be directly investigated by the electroanalytical method.…”

“…Generally, since the extracting solvent affects to extractability in the ion association extraction systems more strongly than that in chelate extraction system, PC was mainly examined in the former systems. For example, B. G. Stephens Vol.29 No.3 (2018) et al has reported the extraction of ferroin complexes using PC as a solvent with different derivatives of 1,10-phenanthroline [3][4][5] , and PC was also used for the extracting solvent in the polarographic determination of halo-complex ions of some metals 6,7) . On the other hand, only few attempts to applying PC to chelate extraction system were reported 8,9) , and the paper on the solvent extraction of metal ions using BC could not be found at all by reviewing the literature.…”

“…Stephens et al, utilized PC to extraction photometric determination of ferroin-type Fe(II) complexes instead of nitrobenzene [4][5][6] . After these work, PC has seen little use.…”
