A series of tripodal receptors designed to recognise the outer coordination sphere of the hexachlorometallate anion [PtCl(6)](2-), and thus show selectivity for ion-pair formation over chloride binding, has been synthesised and characterised. The tripodal ligands contain urea, amido or sulfonamido hydrogen-bond donors, which are aligned to bind to the regions of greatest electron density along the faces and edges of the octahedral anion. The ligand structure incorporates a protonatable bridgehead nitrogen centre that provides a positive charge to ensure the solubility of a neutral 2:1 [LH](+)/[PtCl(6)](2-) complex in water-immiscible solvents. The extraction of [PtCl(6)](2-) from acidic chloride solutions was evaluated by using a pH-swing mechanism to control the loading and stripping of the metallate anion. The ligands L(1)-L(3), L(5)-L(9), L(11)-L(13) and L(15) showed extremely high loading (up to 95% in some cases) and high selectivity for [PtCl(6)](2-) over chloride ions (present in a 60-fold excess) compared with trioctylamine, a model Alamine reagent, which, under identical conditions, only extracted 10% of the Pt(IV) anions. Generally, extraction was observed to be greater for urea-containing ligands than their amido analogues, and a quantitative recovery of platinum from feed solutions was achieved. The formation of neutral ([LH](+))(2)[PtCl(6)](2-) packages in organic media is supported by single-crystal X-ray structure determinations of [(L(2)H)(2)PtCl(6)] x 2 CH(3)CN, [(L(8)H)(2)PtCl(6)(MeOH)(2)], [(L(12)H)(2)PtCl(6)] x 2 CH(3)CN and [(L(14)H)(2)PtCl(6)], which confirm the presence of significant hydrogen bonding between the anion and urea or amido moieties of the protonated ligand and the anion. The structure of [(L(1)H)(H(3)O)PtCl(6)] x C(6)H(6) x CH(3)CN shows hydrogen bonding of a H(3)O(+) cation to the receptor and confirms that other stoichiometries are also possible, indicating that speciation in solution may be more complex.

Resumen La obtención de cobre de recursos primarios mediante extracción con disolventes se ha venido desarrollando de forma continua durante los últimos 25-30 años, lo que ha supuesto un esfuerzo continuado, tanto de investigación como de puesta en práctica de los resultados obtenidos de esta investigación básica, y siendo uno de los mayores éxitos en el desarrollo de la industria de un metal. El éxito de esta operación no hubiera sido posible sin que a su vez las dos operaciones que la acompañan (lixiviación y electrólisis), con sus propias innovaciones, permitiesen su perfecto acoplamiento en la secuencia operacional. La recuperación de cobre mediante estos procesos hidrometalúrgicos está firmemente establecida y el hecho de su importancia es el número creciente de plantas construidas o que se van a construir hasta el comienzo del siglo XXL En el presente trabajo se presentan datos sobre la aplicación de esta secuencia de operaciones en la recuperación de un metal: el cobre.Palabras clave: Cobre. The recovery of copper by leaching-solvent extractionelectrowinning: Towards the XXI century AbstractThe obtention of copper from primary resources by solvent extraction has been developed continuously over the past 25-30 years, entailing a continuous effort both of research and development and being one of the biggest successes in the industrial development of a given metal. The success of this operation was not possible without the corresponding developments, at the same time, of the two accompanying operations (leaching and electrowinning), which perfectly coupled in the operational sequence. The recovery of copper by means of these hydrometallurgical processes is firmly established and being reflecting in the growing number of operational plants under construction and/or commisioned until the beginning of the XXI century. This work presents data on the succesfully application of the sequence of operations on the recovery of a metal: copper.

In the present work, amine based extractant and its mixture with cationic and solvating extractants were tested for the extraction of HCl from chloride solution containing Al(III). The chloride feed solution resulted from the leaching of spent HDS (hydro-desulfurization) catalysts. For this purpose, amine extractants, such as TOA (trioctyl amine), Alamine 336 (a mixture of tri-octyl/decyl amine), Alamine 308 (tri-isooctyl amine), and TEHA (tri 2-ethylhexyl amine) were used and the extraction and stripping behavior of HCl was compared. The extracted HCl was easily stripped from loaded TEHA phase, when compared with the other tested tertiary amine system. Solvent extraction reaction of HCl by TEHA was determined from the extraction data. Unlike TOA and Alamine 336, adding cationic extractant to TEHA had negligible effect on the extraction and stripping of HCl. In our experimental ranges, no Al was extracted by amines and pure HCl was recovered. MaCabeThiele diagrams for the extraction and stripping of HCl by TEHA were constructed.
