Extraction of phenol compound from Mentha piperita by ultrasonic waves based on a response surface methodology

Abstract: In this study, optimization of the extraction of phenol compounds from Mentha piperita using ultrasonic waves with response surface methodology (RSM) was assessed. In this regard, a central composite design with three independent variables of time (5, 27.5, and 50 min), temperature (25, 45, and 65°C), and concentrations of ethanol in the water–ethanol solution (0%, 50%, and 100%) was used. Besides, the antioxidant activity tests (DPPH radical scavenging assay, ferric reducing antioxidant… Show more

“…Significant terms in the formula were determined by analysis of variance (ANOVA). Model fit was tested by comparing F-tests, lack of fit, regression coefficient (RC), predicted RC, adjusted RC, and p-value (significance = probability level<5%) [12] . An appropriate formula will have a higher predicted R 2 , and a lower estimation error sum of squares.…”

“…Response surface methodology (RSM) is an appropriate optimization technique in processing and product development. RSM is a set of statistical designs that determine the relationships among several independent variables and one or more dependent variables [12] , [13] . In a study, Rahman et al, [14] proposed that the optimum condition for lactose concentration using the RSM test setup for osmosis dehydration of zucchini as 49.99%.…”

“…The fitness of the model was probed via the comparison of the F test, lack of fit, RC, predicted RC, adjusted RC, and p value. Significance was judged by calculating the probability level that the F statistic estimated from the data is <5% (Roshanpour et al, 2023). The lack-of-fit values were checked corresponding to the variation of the data around the fitted model designed.…”

“…Response surface methodology (RSM), comprising sophisticated mathematical and statistical techniques, is used for the improvement and optimization of different processes (Roshanpour et al, 2023; Yang et al, 2023). In a study, Eren and Kaymak‐Ertekin (2007) proposed optimal conditions using a RSM test setup for OD of potato as 22°C for temperature, 54.5% for sucrose concentration, 14% for salt concentration, and 329 min for treatment time.…”

“…bioactives. Whereas the advantages associated with ohmic, microwave or ultrasound-assisted hydrodistillation to obtain essential oils rich in volatile bioactives have been described in a number of studies [13][14][15][16][17], literature regarding the development of procedures based on pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) [18], ultrasound-assisted extraction [19,20] or microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) [21][22][23][24][25] for the enhanced recovery of Mentha sp. bioactives is much more limited.…”
