Extraction of kewda (Pandanus fascicularis Lam.) flowers with hexane: composition of concrete, absolute and wax

Abstract: Extraction of male spadices of kewda (Pandanus fascicularis Lam.) flowers with hexane furnished a waxy extract, the so-called 'concrete'. Treatment of the extract with methanol gave a reddish oily residue ('absolute') with a smell strongly reminiscent of the aroma of kewda flowers. Concrete, absolute and separated waxes were analysed by GC and GC-MS. The methanol-soluble portion contains considerable quantities of fatty acids and their methyl esters, which function as a fixative for the volatile fragrant compo… Show more

“…The kewda flowers on extraction with hexane afforded 0.315 ± 0.015% of waxy extract (concrete), which, on treatment with methanol, provided somewhat fat‐free absolute in 0.167 ± 0.007% yields. The compositions of concrete and absolute obtained by the methanol process have been published earlier (Rout et al. 2005).…”

“…The peak identification was carried out by comparison of mass spectra with mass spectra available on Adams, National institute of standards and technology (NIST)‐1 and NIST‐2 libraries. The identification of compound was confirmed by its calculated relative retention indices using a homologous series of n ‐alkanes (C8–C15), and compared it with the literature values …”

“…In an attempt to overcome the aforementioned problems associated with the hydrodistillation process, unconventionally, we have isolated the fragrance from ~85 kg flowers using hexane as solvent . The concentrated hexane extract is so‐called concrete resulting in 0.46% of yield.…”

“…(Asia Pacific Medicinal Plant Database) in addition to the different parts of the plant itself being used for various non-therapeutic purposes. In an earlier study (Rout et al, 2005), the identity of individual components responsible for its aromatic make-up like 2-phenyl ethyl methyl ether (PEME) (major constituent 440%), terpinen-4-ol (412%), a-terpineol ( 48%), 2-phenyl ethanol ( 47%), sabinene, myrcene, p-cymene, limonene, g-terpinene, 1,8-cineole, a-thujene, a and b-pinene were unmasked. A transcriptomic study of the male flowers would complement the above chemical profiling data in identifying the subset of genes responsible for its unique floral bouquet in addition to isolating floral expressed genes.…”
