Extraction of interesting organic compounds from olive oil waste

Show more

“…Another pretreatment for valorization of olive wastes is aroma extraction. However, reports on the aroma extraction of olive residues are rare as they are more commonly used for extraction and application of polyphenols and pectins [353]. However, Reboredo-Rodríguez, et al [354] described a method for the extraction of volatiles from olive samples based on dynamic headspace-thermal desorption (DHS-TD) combined with GC-MS.…”

“…The most widely-used technique is to pre-treat the initial material and convert oleuropein to hydroxytyrosol, prior to extracting phenols with solvent and/or other technologies. Fernández-Bolaños et al [16] summarise the current knowledge on the utilisation of residual products, with more than 90 references including articles and patents, and highlight promising future applications. They classify all these studies into two options for use: the recovery of valuable natural components, and bioconversion into useful products.…”

“…Olives and olive oil are nutritionally valuable parts of a diet, since the consumption of olives and olive oil is associated with a variety of health benefits, such as lower incidences of heart disease and certain types of cancer [1]- [4]. These findings have prompted a considerable amount of research into the composition of olive fruits, and nature of those components responsible for the observed beneficial health effects [4].…”
