“…can be easily calculated solely from the molecular structure (Hano et al, 1992;Ghosh et al, 1997) and applied for prediction of certain membrane permeation properties (Patil et al, 1995;Li, 1975). Using the liquid membrane technique, we have demonstrated the feasibility of separation of various cephalosporin molecules (Sahoo et al, 1996(Sahoo et al, , 1997(Sahoo et al, , 1998Ghosh et al, 1995). Such liquid membranes can be effective for separation of carboxylic acids as well as amino acids (Lazarova and Peeva, 1994;Thein et al, 1988;Reisinger and Marr, 1993).…”

“…Since we do not anticipate any enhancement in their values by further increasing the stirrer speed (leading to phase dispersion), we presume that some other physio-chemical processes occuring at the interface affect the extraction rate. It is known that Aliquat-336 is a surface acting agent and lowering of interfacial tension between the aqueous solution and the butyl acetate is quite significant at high [ P O ] as reported in our previous work (Ghosh et al, 1995). The extraction kinetics may be analysed from an interfacial reaction model incorporating the effect of camer adsorption at the interface.…”

“…In view of this, reactive cxtraction has been extensively studied for penicillin-(; (Likidis et al, 1987;Schugerl, 1984, 1985); cephalosporin-C ; clavulanic acid, penicillin G and V, amoxicillin and phenyl acetic acid (Harris et al, 1990), etc. Furthermore, the concept has been exploited to develop liquid membrane processes where facilitated transport could be realised to give high flux and selectivity (Thien et al, 1990;Lee et al, 1993Likidis and Schugerl, 1987;Lee and Lee, 1992;Ghosh et al, 1995;Sahoo et al, 1996). Various aspects of extraction and purification of beta-lactam antibiotics in general and the liquid membrane process in particular have been recently reviewed by the authors (Ghosh et al, 1996(Ghosh et al, , 1997.…”

“…(27), a result that probably implies the hypothesis of an interfacial reaction control mechanism for the extraction of 7-ACA with Aliquat-336 which has good surfactant properties. Indeed significant lowering of the interfacial tension between on aqeous cephalosporin solution and butyl acetate solution of Aliquat-336 could be demonstrated as an important factor for stability of an immoblized liquid membrane system (Ghosh et al, 1995) wherein the principle of reactive extraction was exploited.…”

“…We have been studying the liquid membrane technique for extraction of cephalosporin antibiotics. By suitably manipulating the aqueous phase environment in the feed and stripping phases and selecting the extracting agent (carrier) for the membrane phase, facilitated transport in the membrane could be demonstrated atleast for CPC, 7-ACA and cephalexin (Ghosh et al, 1995;Sahoo et al, 1996Sahoo et al, ,1997Sahoo et al, ,1999. Complimentary studies on equilibrium and kinetics of the reactive extraction of these compounds are being made separately in our laboratory as these data are useful for optimising the operating conditions of liquid membrane processes.…”
