“…oxidation rate from amount of elemental sulfur applied (Fox et al 1964;Janzen and Bettany 1987a); (ii) the ubiquity of sultur oxidation observed in agricultural soils (Janzen and Bettany l987a,b;Lawrence and Germida 1988b); (iii) the relationship between the soil biomass and sulfur oxidation (Lawrence and Germida 1988b); (iv) the stimulation of sulfur oxidation by glucose amendment (Lawrence and Germida 1988b) and by plant rhizospheres (Grayston and Germida 1990). In addition, the production of thiosulfate by this population is consistent with the polythionate pathway thought to be active in soils (Nor and Tabatabai 1977;Wainwright 1984). Smaller populations of heterotrophic sulfate producers and heterotrophic thiosulfate oxidizers were also detected in most soils examined.…”

“…Thiosulphate and tetrathionate were determined colorimetrically (Nor and Tabatabai, 1976) using 10mM CaCI2 as the extractant. Since a fixed amount of sulphur was added to each soil, regardless of type, on a fresh weight basis all results were expressed on a g-~ FW basis.…”

“…I4c analyses were performed by the University of Arizona NSF Accelerator Mass Spectrometry Laboratory. Inorganic sulfur species were determined by Huffman Laboratories using the following methods: sulfate was determined by ion chromatography; thiosulfate, tetrathionate and thiocyanide were determined according to the methods described by Nor & Tabatabai (1976). CS2 extractions were carried out according to Heinrich et al (1961).…”
