Heavy metals can remain in the marine ecosystems for a long time, they may affect biota in the food chain as a result. Sometimes the existence of xenobiotics causes so great a alter in the ecosystem that a return to earlier, natural conditions is not viable. Human pressure on the sea's resources is increasing, it affects the health of many organisms, leading to changes in the food chains and influencing accumulation in the tissues of biota. Sea cucumbers are being used for heavy metal pollution studies. They are preferred with their many features such as easy collection from the land, feeding with organic matter, contact with sediment, maintenance in laboratories, obtaining sufficient tissue, consuming some species. This review covers heavy metal studies with sea cucumbers in different seas. The results are compared with each other. In addition, the evaluation of the consumed sea cucumber species in terms of human health has been discussed.

Optimization of extraction process for efficient imino acids recovery and purification from low-value sea cucumber

For high recoveries and purities of L-proline (L-Pro) and L-hydroxyproline (L-Hyp) from the low-value sea cucumber Acaudina leucoprocta, the extraction process was systematically investigated and optimized. The results indicated that, in decoloration of A. leucoprocta hydrolysate, activated carbon powdered W660 was more suitable due to the low addition amount and short treatment time compared with macroporous resin HZ816 offering comparable decoloration ratio and imino acids recovery yields. For oxidative deamination, HCl-HND 3 exhibited better performance than NaND 2 with complete primary amino acids broken-down and fewer imino acids loss. After decoloration and oxidative deamination under their optimized conditions, an extraction solution was obtained with L-Pro and L-Hyp recovery yields of 76.3% and 78.8% from A. leucoprocta hydrolysate, which was directly used for separation of L-Pro and L-Hyp with ion-exchange chromatograph. This work may be referenced for the large-scale L-Pro and L-Hyp production from other low-value materials.

BACKGROUND: Sea cucumber Acaudina leucoprocta is a low-value marine product with high contents of heavy metals in the body wall. However, it could be used as a substitute source of land-based animals for value-added products L-proline (L-Pro) and L-hydroxyproline (L-Hyp). For high recoveries and purities of L-Pro and L-Hyp from A. leucoprocta hydrolysate, the preparative separation of these imino acids with cation exchange resins was investigated. RESULTS:Among 11 cation exchange resins tested, Dowex 50WX8 resin offered the best separation capacity for L-Pro and L-Hyp from each other and impurities. The static equilibrium adsorption data fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm, and the adsorption kinetic followed the pseudo-second-order model. For the most effective ion exchange process, the adsorption and desorption parameters of L-Pro and L-Hyp were optimized with the column packed with Dowex 50WX8 resin. Under optimal conditions, the preparative separation of L-Pro and L-Hyp was easily and effectively achieved. The L-Pro purity increased from 55.7% in the extract of A. leucoprocta hydrolysate to 94.3% in the eluent, and the L-Hyp purity increased from 27.8% to 95.7%; their final recovery yields from the extract of A. leucoprocta hydrolysate were 93.3% and 89.4%, respectively. CONCLUSION: Our study provided an effective approach for large-scale production of imino acids extracted from low-value sea products, and offered a scientific reference for the separation of other valuable components.
