Extraction and characterization of an alginate from the brown seaweed Sargassum turbinarioides Grunow

Abstract: Matrix polysaccharide from the brown algae Sargassum turbinarioides collected in the coastal waters of Nosy Be (Madagascar) in the Indian Ocean was isolated and its structure was studied by 1 H-NMR spectroscopy, FT-IR, SEC-MALLS and HPAEC. An alginate with a molecular weight of 5.528×10 5 g mol −1 was identified as sole polysaccharide. Values of the M/G ratio, F GG , F MM and F GM (or F GM ) blocks were measured at respectively 0.94, 0.39, 0.36 and 0.25 and compared with those of alginates from other Sargassum… Show more

“…Moreover, SPC30 and SPH30 were found to be insoluble in water, but well soluble in an alkaline solution. In the FT-IR spectra of SPC30 and SPH30 (Figure 2), the characteristic absorption bands for typical guluronic acids (780 cm -1 ) were also observed, indicating that SPC30 and SPH30 were not fucoidans (Fenoradosa et al 2010).…”

“…Fenoradosoa et al [12]. A known weight (25 g) of the algal powder was soaked in 800 mL of 2% formaldehyde for 24 h at room temperature, washed with water and then added to 800 mL of 0.2 mol/L HCl.…”

“…Oleh itu, kebanyakan industri makanan mengawal suhu dan masa dalam proses pengekstrakan alginat secara alkali untuk mendapatkan produk alginat yang mempunyai kelikatan yang diinginkan (Fenoradosoa et al 2010;Torres et al 2007). Kesimpulannya, larutan alginat yang terhasil dalam kajian ini mempunyai sifat reologi yang serupa dengan larutan alginat komersial iaitu kelikatan pseudoplastik dengan penipisan ricih.…”
