Extracting Culture or Injecting Nature? Rewilding in Transatlantic Perspective

Abstract: Of the many challenges facing ecological restoration, the one most often receiving attention is the issue of selecting a goal or target state. In the project of repairing degraded natural systems, do we aim to bring back a pristine, wild state or else a more humanized, pastoral state? Re-wilding is the general label of the former goal, whereas re-gardening might be the best descriptor of the latter effort. To put this in a transatlantic context, North Americans may be much more comfortable rewilding, whereas E… Show more

“…Compositionalist approaches are often based on a fixed ecological baseline in the past (Hall 2010(Hall , 2014Jørgensen 2015;Corlett 2016) and there is often a mismatch between the perceived ecological effect of non-native invasive species and the ecological reality. Management decisions (e.g., to cull species) are often made in accordance with human timescales rather than ecological scales (Beever et al 2019).…”

“…The view on nature conservation is also affected by whether the guide describes nature as being separate from culture or as being formed by culture. Nature conservation can be regarded as a protection measure against human activity or as the continuous maintenance of species through active human management, corresponding to hands-off and hands-on views on the environment (Hall, 2014). How the local nature conservation processes look today and how the landscape has historically developed are common themes cutting across the sessions.…”

“…These different approaches may be based either on the stimulation of natural autonomy through enhancement of natural processes that were impaired by humans or on the improvement of the ecological functioning through the enhancement of naturalistic processes that positively impact the ecological integrity of the area (Arts et al 2016). However, it does not involve a return to a pre-human state in the sense of excluding people from nature (Hall 2014). Rather, it reflects new forms of environmental consciousness and new forms of experiencing and living with nature through the provision of new opportunities to interact with nature (Arts et al 2016).…”
