Extract of seaweed Gracilaria verrucosa as immunostimulant to controlling white spot disease in Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei

Abstract: This experiment was conducted to examine effect of Gracilaria verrucosa extract in diet with different dosages to enhance immune response and resistance against white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) in the Pacific white shrimp. The experiment consisted of six treatments in three replicates respectively, namely K-(without extract), K + (without extract + infected WSSV), A (2 g/kg of feed + infected WSSV) , B (3 g/kg of feed + infected WSSV), C (4 g/kg of feed + infected WSSV), and D (5 g/kg of feed + infected WSSV).… Show more

“…The whiteleg shrimp immune response was evaluated by calculating the total hemocyte count (THC) and differential hemocyte counts (DHC). Collection and preparation of shrimp hemolymph were carried out by Zahra et al [ 28 ]. THC and DHC were analyzed by taking 0.1 ml of hemolymph in the fifth pereopod using a 1 ml syringe filled with 0.3 ml of Na-EDTA anticoagulant to prevent blood clots.…”

“…Improving the non-specific immune system is positively correlated with increasing the health of shrimp to fight disease. Using natural ingredients for immunostimulants can increase shrimp's non-specific immunity to ward off disease and be environmentally friendly (Zahra et al, 2017). Giving immunostimulants from natural ingredients to vanamei shrimp is expected to solve disease problems in vanamei shrimp by increasing non-specific shrimp immunity and being environmentally friendly.…”
