Sibling expectations to provide future instrumental or emotional support for a brother or sister with schizophrenia when parents became disabled or died were examined. Data came from a sample of 137 siblings participating in a longitudinal study of aging families of adults with schizophrenia. Early socialization experiences, the quality of the sibling relationship, and personal caregiver gains propel siblings toward a future caregiving role, whereas geographic distance and beliefs about the controllability of psychiatric symptoms reduce expectations of future involvement. Keywords family caregiving; sibling relationships; schizophrenia; mental illness; caregiver gainsWith the rise of deinstitutionalization in the 1960s, many persons with mental illness turned to their families for support because of the lack of adequate community-based services. Even today, with the presence of an array of community services, family members, in particular parents, are often required to step in to fill in the gaps in the service system. However, as parents age, their capacity to provide support diminishes and ultimately ends (Lefley, 1987). It is generally assumed that siblings will become the next generation of caregivers for adults with mental illness (Hatfield & Lefley, 2000;Horwitz, 1993;Wasow, 2000). However, little is known about the willingness of siblings to take on a future caregiving role or the factors that may propel or deter siblings from taking on this role in the future. In this study, we investigate two research questions: (1) To what extent do siblings expect to be involved in future caregiving tasks for a brother or sister with schizophrenia? (2) What factors influence sibling expectations for assuming a future caregiving role for a brother or sister?This study extends our prior work on the role of siblings as future caregivers for adults with mental illness in three important ways. First, in our earlier work, the outcome was limited to whether or not siblings expected to be involved in the future direct care of their brother or sister with mental illness. In this study, we asked siblings about their caregiving expectations or intentions with respect to a broad range of instrumental tasks and emotionally supportive activities. We focused on behavioral expectations or intentions toward future involvement because intentions, although not the sole determinant of behavior, are better predictors of behaviors than attitudes (Fishbein, Hennessy, Yzer, & Douglas, 2003). Second, we gathered data on a much richer array of factors that may influence the extent to which siblings expect to provide instrumental and emotional support to their brother or sister with mental illness when their parents are no longer able to assume a caregiving role. Pierre Bourdieu’s Masculine Domination was published in English in 2001, three years after the appearance of the French version. In order to deconstruct in vivo the working of sociological paradigm-alchemy, a close reading of the Bourdieusian argument is offered. After summing up the main thesis of the book, Bourdieu’s statements will be intended to be questioned, according to which the school, the family, the state and the church would reproduce, in the long run, masculine domination. The paper will also seek to identify the methodological trick of the Bourdieusian vision on history, namely that, metaphorically speaking, he compares the streaming river to the riverside cliffs. It will be argued that when Bourdieu discusses ‘the constancy of habitus’, the ‘permanence in and through change’, or the ‘strength of the structure’, he extends his paradigm about the displacement of the social structure to the displacement of the men/women relationship. Hence, it will be suggested that, in opposition to Bourdieu’s thesis, masculine domination is not of universal validity but its structural weight and character have fundamentally changed in the long run, i.e. the masculine habitual centre gradually shifted from a social practice governed by the drives of physical violence to symbolic violence.

Resumo: Partindo do princípio de que a maternidade é uma construção social cada vez mais vinculada aos processos comunicacionais, sobretudo na voluptuosa oferta de conselhos e diretrizes do que é ser mãe, este trabalho procura situar tal debate com base nas principais abordagens feitas sobre maternidade nos estudos feministas. O trabalho apresenta um recorte do estado dessa pesquisa no Brasil, chamando atenção para três eixos temático-teóricos e para os possíveis pontos de exploração nos estudos de mídia e maternidade.Palavras-chave: mídia e maternidade; feminismo; gênero; revisão de literatura.Abstract: Feminism, motherhood and the media -historically close relations in review -We start from the premise that motherhood is a social construct increasingly linked to communication processes, especially in the voluptuous offer of advice and guidelines of what is to be a mother. Taking on from this idea, this paper seeks to situate such debate. Based on the main approaches about motherhood in feminist studies, the paper presents a state-focused approach of this research in Brazil, bringing attention to three thematic-theoretical axes and to potential topics yet to be explored in media and motherhood studies.Keywords: media and motherhood; feminism; gender; literature review.É cada vez mais indissociável a relação entre mídia e maternidade. A voluptuosa oferta de produtos de informação voltados para a criação de filhos sinaliza os processos comunicacionais como espaço privilegiado de prescrição dos procedimentos necessários para o exercício adequado da maternagem. Programas de rádio e TV, blogs, redes sociais, portais de conteúdo especializado, revistas, colunas em jornais e manuais são exemplos fartos dessa percepção. Levando-se em conta que a mídia é um local inegável de produção de sentido, a comunicação tornou-se um espaço singular para a pesquisa das mais diferentes áreas do conhecimento interessadas na construção social da maternidade.
